As mentioned on 60 MINUTES last night, we are thrilled to announce that the 19th Amendment, which removed restrictions for women to vote, will go on permanent display at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Beginning in March 2026, visitors will have the unique opportunity to see this groundbreaking legislation alongside some of the most important documents in American history—the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Emancipation Proclamation. The 19th Amendment represents a pivotal moment in our nation's history, as it removed voting restrictions for more than half of Americans and was the result of over eight decades of tireless advocacy by the women’s suffrage movement. This addition to the display marks an effort to present a fuller story of America’s journey toward equality and democracy. It also serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that continues as we move toward a more perfect union, just in time to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan shared her excitement: "I am thrilled we are adding these documents as we celebrate 250 years of the United States of America. On a trip to Washington, DC, I had the chance to learn more about the building sometimes referred to as the Nation’s Temple of History. 🏛️📖 We’re excited to highlight the important work of Dr. Ashley D. Farmer, a 2023 National Archives Foundation (NAF) Cokie Roberts Women’s History Fellow. During her fellowship, Dr. Farmer looked into the extensive records held at the National Archives to research her forthcoming book, "Gendering Surveillance: African American Women Activists and the FBI." Dr. Farmer researched records of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Her findings, drawn from the FBI’s administrative records, case files, and even J. Edgar Hoover’s scrapbooks, offer a crucial contribution to our understanding of both surveillance history and the experiences of Black women activists. She also uncovered fascinating insights into the FBI’s early surveillance practices. The Cokie Roberts Women’s History Fellowship, launched in 2019 by NAF, supports historians, journalists, and authors who elevate women’s history using the rich records of the National Archives. This fellowship honors the legacy of journalist Cokie Roberts, who dedicated her career to bringing women’s stories to light. We’re proud to continue this mission by supporting scholars like Dr. Farmer in their vital research.
