Speaking during a Panel discussion hosted by the IPPF in collaboration with the Soul City Institute at the SVRI Forum 2024 in Cape Town, Dr Kalpana Apte, DG , FPA India, underscored the need for a comprehensive, multi-system, survivor-centric approach to preventing and mitigating SGBV. She added that recurrent sexually transmitted, or reproductive tract infections, or the inability to choose and use contraceptives, leading to repeat abortions could be manifestations of SGBV. Unless the health care system was equipped to consider SGBV as a possible causative factor of any of these conditions, subtle/hidden forms of SGBV could go unrecognized and unaddressed, at this first point of care and support for survivors. Documenting the impact of SGBV not only on the health and well-being of the survivor, but also on the health system and the economy at large, in terms of costs incurred in treating the adverse health outcomes resulting from SGBV, or the cost of survivors dropping out of the workforce due to the fear of being exposed to SGBV at the workplace, was necessary to deliver a multi-system, survivor-centric response to SGBV. The Panel presented perspectives from subject matter experts representing the IPPF Secretariat, Soul City Institute for Social Justice, Moroccan Family Planning Association, Raising Voices, and PKBI, besides FPA India, on North-to-South and South-to-South Collaboration towards Integrating SGBV in SRH Delivery.
