Growing up, I had one or two all too brief encounters with Mr. Ratan Tata. Both my parents worked with the Tata Group, and I was fortunate to have visited Bombay House, the Mumbai headquarters as a child and teenager. The wisdom that his actions imparted has been timeless, and I still cherish how his life shaped my perspective on life and leadership. Many may not know that Mr. Tata was an architect by training, and he actually designed at least two homes in Jamshedpur. One of them belonged to Soli Devitre, and it still has the same charm, characteristic of classic prairie-style architecture. Whenever I think of him, just one word comes to my mind — humility! He loved cars, planes (I think), and superbly stitched suits, but there was never anything showy about him. He loved his dog Tito more than anything in the world. He cared so much about animals that he made sure to welcome them and have a room for them at Bombay House. Including the provision of water during the hot summer months. And when it comes to his contribution to the development of various cities such as Jamshedpur, Pune and Mumbai, and the whole of India — it cannot be described in words. He once said, "Don’t start a business to make money; start a business to make a difference." And that’s exactly how he lived. I think his life was also about hard work, a bold and visionary outlook, respect for the legacy he inherited, a love of culture, and an enduring passion for his hobbies. Rest in peace, Mr. Tata.
