We had a lot of fun testing this activity before our class this week. Our students will learn about how the concentration of a solution is reported and how to calculate how much of the reagents they need to make a solution with a specific concentration. They will then make the solution and use it in this fun chemical, cross-linking reaction and take their creations home with them!

Welcoming Our New Interns at Phycin! We’re excited to introduce Esther Mahanyu a senior at Tuscarora High School, and Aryana Cibeira, a junior at Linganore High School, who have joined us for an enriching biotechnology internship! Through Frederick Community College’s Biotechnology Internship Program, they’re with us from October to December for a hands-on learning experience. Guided by Satarupa Bhaduri, Ph.D. and Tianqi Guo, Esther and Aryana are diving into lab work, data collection, analysis, and presentations, building valuable skills and confidence for future careers in biomedical research. We’re proud to support these talented students on their path to becoming the next generation of biotech leaders right here in Frederick, Maryland! Stay tuned for updates on their journey. #BiotechInternship #FutureScientists #STEMEducation #Phycin #FCC #TEDCO #FITCI

OspreyBio's BoP (Bird of Prey) vector building system is groundbreaking in both its scope and potential. With its expansive and combinatorial design, our current library already enables the creation of more multigenic vector sets than there are stars in the galaxy. As we continue to refine and expand this library, we anticipate reaching approximately 5.257211409 E+12 combinations of therapeutically relevant vector combinations. This number is not just a static figure; it is likely to grow as ongoing research uncovers more genes of interest, further empowering users of the BoP platform to develop targeted therapies. However, the data required to draw meaningful inferences from these combinations is immense. It calls for the development of new tools, both in artificial intelligence and in the broader field of DNA engineering outside of monogenic vectors. This is where the challenge becomes exciting—integrating computational methods, new engineering workflows, and AI with cutting-edge genetic research to unlock the potential hidden within this massive dataset. I’m truly amazed by what the team has accomplished, - and the future where transformative therapies seem limitless.

What Do Reusable Rockets🚀 and Reusable DNA🧬 Have in Common? I continue to have my mind blown by the achievements of SpaceX and its complete redefinition of what is possible in the space industry. Their lynchpin technology, as we all know, are reusable rockets—standardized systems that launch, return, launch again; reusing standard components; finding modular and efficient ways to keep escaping the gravity well; etc. The cost and time savings are obvious, but it did something I would argue is much more important - it completely changed the way the space industry thinks about accessing space and opened up doors few ever thought would open or even existed. I can't help but now make the bold claim: I think this is the mindset that hasn't reached the gene and cell therapy industry yet - and we desperately need a "frameshift". Nearly everything in biotech begins with DNA, and the only way you can "get" DNA is to build it. Today, DNA vector construction is artisanal - often a one-off process: 1. New design 2. Build/synthesize from scratch 3. Repeat for each research need But there are severe limitations: how many times we had to constantly redesign, recreate, resynthesize sequences? How many times have your sequences been rejected for being too complex? How many times have you been told that what you're trying to achieve is impossible? This is all tied to a lack of standardization and a dearth of new technologies. This is my point: DNA is foundational to biotech like rockets are foundational to space exploration/travel. SpaceX redefined the paradigm because they redefined rockets. Now is the time to redefine the paradigm for DNA design and vector construction. #BirdOfPrey is here to do just that.
