William (Bill) Mobley: "Price Hikes Drive Streaming Spend Increase - Consumers spent 22% more on entertainment last quarter, according to research from the Digital Entertainment Group. But despite the sizeable increase, this doesn’t actually equate to higher consumption of media. The revenue growth came almost entirely via SVOD price increases. SVOD penetration has stalled at 84%, which may represent a saturated market for now, so the only way SVOD operators can make more money now is from price hikes, not subscriber growth. And as they grow increasingly desperate to achieve profitability, every major SVOD service has been jacking up prices on a regular basis. Anyone who has stuck with their streaming subscriptions is now paying a lot more for them, with fee increases ranging from 27% to 43%. Meanwhile, transactional VOD is down, with subscription streaming having far outpaced digital sales and pay-per-view in recent years. Physical media sales and rentals are also down, representing just 2% of spending, having suffered a recent blow from the shutdown of Redbox. UPDATE: Brofman Submits $4.3B Bid for Natl's stake in Paramount- Edgar Bronfman has proposed buying National Amusements in an equity deal valued at $1.75 billion, equal to what Skydance has offered for Redstone’s company, plus investing $1.5 billion onto Paramount’s balance sheet, also similar to what Skydance has offered, the people said. The figure also would cover a $400 million breakup fee owed if Paramount chooses to go with an offer other than Skydance. Bronfman, who formerly ran Warner Music and liquor giant Seagram, has secured financing commitments primarily from high net-worth individuals and family offices, the people said. He has also teamed up with movie producer Steven Paul, who previously expressed interest in National Amusements.
