About us

In 1805 Tristram B. Freeman opened an auction house with the desire to “cherish the arts in the new world.” Over 200 years later, Freeman’s is still committed to exceptional art and exceptional people. We believe in a unique standard of one-on-one service, where people are just as important as their possessions. As America’s oldest auction house, we have spent decades building relationships with a loyal, diverse, and passionate group of collectors in Philadelphia and beyond. Freeman's is a venerable organization, whose success is due in no small part to the dedication of our employees. We share a commitment to providing the very best in customer service, professional integrity, and an enthusiasm for the auction business. With international experience and comprehensive knowledge of market conditions, the specialists at Freeman’s work closely with consignors and collectors to offer unparalleled service in the sale and purchase of fine art, antiques, jewelry, books, and more. We are well known for our success with the Pennsylvania Impressionist artists, selling more works by these painters than any other leading auction house at world-record prices. Additionally, Freeman’s has been entrusted with the sale of some of the world’s most fascinating collections, including the Richard Scrushy Collection, The Lehman Brothers Collection, the Estate of Janet Brown, and the Collection of H. Richard Dietrich, Jr. Freeman’s holds more than 25 auctions a year in the following categories: 20th Century Design; American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists; American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts; Asian Arts; Books, Maps & Manuscripts; English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts; European Art & Old Masters; Jewelry & Watches; Modern & Contemporary Art; and Silver & Objets de Vertu.

Gertrude Abercrombie's fascination with magic takes center stage in The Magician. Levitation, a recurring theme in her work, reflects her deep interest in the surreal and mystical. In this beautifully balanced painting, a woman floats above a sleek chaise, while a black cat, Abercrombie’s familiar alter ego, raises its paw as if to summon the levitation. The piece is a perfect blend of the everyday and the otherworldly, showcasing the artist’s unique wit and careful, precise composition. https://lnkd.in/enigQ557

Deputy Chairman at FREEMAN’S | HINDMAN

As I said during my opening remarks, probably the smartest room of people in NYC last Wednesday was in Freeman’s | Hindman’s much admired new gallery space on the UES. Gathered together were many of the leading appraisers and specialists in the US, many of whom had contributed to the indispensable newly published tome ‘Appraising Art : The Definitive Guide - Volume 2’ . F|H was delighted to host such an enjoyable evening and it was a pleasure catching up with so many old friends and colleagues over sushi and champagne. Special thanks are due to the amazing Linda Selvin and her crack team at the Appraisers Association of America for making it such a successful event! #appraisers #art #valuation #booklaunch #AAA #freemanshindman #appraisal

Last night we got to celebrate the book launch of "Appraising Art: The Definitive Guide - Volume 2"! We could not be more grateful to everyone who has contributed to the new handbook. It is the only one of its kind on the market and an invaluable resource to appraisers and art professionals alike to stay current with the best practices and techniques. Thank you everyone who attended and to FREEMAN'S lending us their beautiful space for the evening! Do you still need to order the new handbook? Get it on our website: https://lnkd.in/eH_YDbQ8
