🎉 Celebrating a Milestone in History and Education 🎉 Yesterday was an extraordinary day at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School (Chicago Public Schools) and EFAC (FRENCH-AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CHICAGO) as we honored the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with a special guest, WWII Veteran Sir Hirsch. Sir Hirsch, a decorated hero and recipient of the French Legion of Honor, shared his remarkable journey and the enduring importance of bravery, partnership, and unity. In a powerful assembly, our students had the unique opportunity to meet Sir Hirsch and hear firsthand accounts of his experiences during WWII. His story is a testament to the unbreakable bond between the United States and France, a relationship built on mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to freedom and democracy. This event commemorated a pivotal moment in history and underscored the importance of our educational mission: promoting a multicultural vision and fostering tolerance through understanding. We nurture a community where empathy, respect, and global awareness thrive by bringing together students from diverse backgrounds. Thanks to the effort of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, via Nicolas Douay, and the Consulate General of France in Chicago represented by Clément Calais, Deputy General Consul of France, our students had an amazing experience. We are incredibly grateful to Sir Hirsch for his service and willingness to inspire future generations. His legacy is a reminder of the power of collaboration and the impact of shared history in shaping a better, more inclusive world. Together, we continue to honor the past, celebrate the present, and build a future where multicultural understanding and cooperation are at the forefront of our educational journey. Promoting reading is more than just a school activity; it's a commitment to students' intellectual and emotional development. As such, FRENCH-AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CHICAGO (EFAC) participated in the #12marsjelis event, held on March 12, 2024, echoing this idea. This initiative allowed our students from Kindergarten to 8th grade to immerse themselves in a world of words, stories and imagination, reinforcing the importance of reading in their education. This 15-minute reading period, during the heure commune, is also a moment of pause and a real emotional regulator. It's an essential breath of air that enriches our educational environment. The widespread adoption in 2019 by the French education system of the " quart d'heure de lecture " has shown significant benefits, not only in encouraging the pleasure of reading, but also in improving concentration and well-being among students. This practice offers a moment of calm and silence, appreciated by children, fostering a more serene school climate. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), students who read for pleasure on a daily basis have a reading proficiency score (comprehension and fluency) 30 points higher than those who don't, equivalent to almost a school year's worth of learning. In addition, a study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics reveals that children who are exposed to reading and books from an early age are more likely to develop strong language skills and new cognitive abilities. The #12marsjelis initiative isn't just a one-off, annual event, it's part of a long-term approach to building a reading habit. By regularly integrating this 15-minute reading period into students' daily lives, we're not just taking an educational break; we're planting the seeds of a lifelong passion for reading. Once established, this habit becomes a powerful tool for students' autonomy, personal development and academic success. As an educational community, we have a responsibility to cultivate this love of reading, not only as an academic skill, but also as a source of pleasure, escape and discovery. Let's encourage this practice together, so that every student can benefit from the countless advantages the world of books has to offer. #education #reading #bilingualeducation #lecture
