Fresh Del Monte recently opened a groundbreaking biofertilizer plant near its operations in Kenya. The plant will use residues from the nearby pineapple cannery to create four different types of biofertilizers that will promote plant growth, improve soil health, and offer a more sustainable option than traditional fertilizers.   This is just part of our journey to a more circular economy within our operations.

During my visit to our Kenya operations in June, I toured our new groundbreaking biofertilizer plant. The plant brings my vision of creating a more circular economy within our operations to life. A goal of mine this year is to reuse and repurpose the resides and byproducts of our products. This biofertilizer plant is just one way Fresh Del Monte is prioritizing a circular economy. The plant will use the residues from our pineapple cannery to create different types of biofertilizers, which our company will use on its own soils, with plans to eventually offer them to other growers in Kenya and across East Africa. It is my hope that this plant and its biofertilizers positively impact the entire agriculture industry in Africa and revolutionize how we farm.   This new venture, called De L’Ora Bio, embodies our company’s innovation, environmental stewardship, and what’s possible when you work to push boundaries and think big.

Del Monte Kenya (DMKL) has supported education in and around its operations since 1960 — it is an important part of the company’s efforts to empower the surrounding communities. Recently, our Chairman Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh visited our operations in Kenya and the schools we support. Looking forward, DMKL is working to increase scholarship opportunities, make technological advancements, and provide additional transportation to continue to facilitate the education of young people who live in our communities.

I’m proud to lead a company that understands the importance and impact of education. Education is a powerful catalyst for community empowerment and progress, and it is a passion of mine that we foster across all of Fresh Del Monte’s regions.   Last month, I had the privilege of visiting our operations in Kenya. I toured our groundbreaking biofertilizer plant and had the honor of visiting one of the schools supported by our educational initiatives. The heartfelt welcome I received from the students and teachers was truly moving.   Since 1960, Del Monte Kenya Ltd. has empowered the communities surrounding our Thika operations through education. In the last decade alone we have impacted 12,000 students across 10 schools, providing nursery, primary, and secondary education to the children of our team members and those in the surrounding communities.   Meeting these bright young minds and hearing their stories reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education. It shapes futures, strengthens communities, and drives global progress.   We are incredibly proud to play a role in nurturing the next generation of leaders and change-makers.    #DelMonteKenya #EducationEfforts #CommunityEmpowerment #VisionaryLeadership

Recently, the Del Monte Japan team held a banana learning experience event during an FC Tokyo soccer game at Japan's national stadium. More than 400 kids and parents took a brief quiz related to bananas, harvested bananas from their bunches, and created their own consumer pack with a specially designed label to take home.    We love bringing enjoyment to families through healthy foods and teaching kids about fruits through activities.

We recently opened a new forest nursery in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica as part of our efforts to promote reforestation in the country. The trees grown here will later be donated to neighboring lands, with a goal of 10,000 per year.    The first donations took place last month, where 115 trees were donated to the private owner Jessica Quesada, 200 to the Committee of Environment and Tourism Projection of Agua Zarcas and 5 to the Zapote school, an educational center in the area.    The nursery is dedicated to the reproduction of native species whose seeds are collected in the company's wooded areas. Among the 27 species of trees that are produced in this nursery are the Bitter Cedar, Carao, Yellow Bark, Mountain Almond, Jabillo, Chinese Mamón, Loquat, among others.    Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e8rMjq3s

We’re honored to receive our third SEAL Award, this time in the Business Sustainability category for our JUNTOS project.    The JUNTOS project, which we are conducting in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, focuses on landscape restoration, water conservation, and sustainable development of communities in need while providing education about sustainable land development for areas surrounding our banana and pineapple operations in Costa Rica and Guatemala.   Through the project, we’ve successfully restored more than 345 hectares of land, proposed more than 400 hectares for private wildlife refuges, set aside more than 10,000 hectares of land for biodiversity conservation, and created five alliances to educate local communities on the importance of these topics.    Congratulations to our team members who have worked tirelessly on this project since its inception in 2021!
