Friends of the Wissahickon conserves, stewards, and advocates for the 2,000 acres of Wissahickon Valley Park.
About us
In 1924 a handful of watchful and passionate citizens set out to ensure the preservation of the Wissahickon Valley Park, which was challenged by chestnut blight, severe ice storms, and encroaching development. These citizens committed to meeting the park needs that a strained city budget could not, and involved themselves in both governance and restoration issues related to the preservation of the Valley. For eighty-eight years the mission of FOW, “to preserve the natural beauty and wildness of the Wissahickon Valley and stimulate public interest therein”, has remained constant while the scope of our work has grown enormously. Today’s FOW, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with over 3,000 members, works in partnership with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department (formerly Fairmount Park), the Philadelphia Water Department and dozens of other regional partners on a wide range of programs including watershed education, trail maintenance and park user safety.

Stop scrolling! We have some important news to share… What if we told you your dollar can make double the impact this Giving Tuesday? FOW’s Board of Directors and a generous anonymous donor have come together to match every donation towards our holiday wish list up to $25,000! Donate here today: https://lnkd.in/eB8Pyvjf This year, we’re asking our community to help us fund a few of our most impactful projects: restoring some of the Wissahickon’s iconic stone structures, increasing access to the park with our largest capital project to date, the Valley Green Restoration Project, and investing in our community by training local high school interns and funding free educational programming for Philadelphia elementary school students. There’s never been a better time to give! Photo courtesy of Rachael Balascak
