The San Francisco Street Tree Nursery will grow up to 1,000 trees for planting on San Francisco’s streets 🌳🌳🌳! The 14,000-square-foot nursery, run by San Francisco Public Works, is located on Fifth Street between the on and off-ramps for the Bay Bridge. We had a great time last month at the Nursery’s open house, which included rides in an arborist bucket truck (last photo)! Participants in our New Roots workforce development program work at the Nursery. They receive training and work experience in arboriculture, urban forestry, and nursery operations and maintenance. Friends of the Urban Forest bring neighbors together to plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco. We are committed to growing San Francisco’s urban forest, building community, and taking a local leadership role in climate solutions through the simple act of planting trees and gardens. Since 1981, we have planted about 60,000 trees, totaling about half of San Francisco's street trees.

Thank you to everyone who came out for the tree planting in the Western Addition on Saturday, August 24th including volunteers from University of California, San Francisco and Logos Lodge! We planted 30 trees surrounding the McDonald's on Fillmore including several native trees (four Ceanothus and one California Buckeye). A special thank you to District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston for his support and for helping us kick off the event. 🌳 Call for Volunteers! We need 40 volunteers for our Community Tree Planting Event in the Excelsior happening Saturday, September 7th from 8:45 AM – 1:00 PM. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to get your hands in the dirt. We provide the tools and guidance. Kids under 18 are welcome (they just need to be accompanied by an adult). We’re hiring a Program Manager, Sidewalk Gardens! The Program Manager is responsible for planning, developing, and managing Friends of the Urban Forest’s Sidewalk Gardens (SWG) program. This includes assisting with program design, implementing and improving upon program processes, engaging with community partners, reporting on work completed to grant funders, and ensuring that program goals are met. This position may also be responsible for completing Special Projects as they arise on a fee-for-service basis. We’re hiring a Green Teens Assistant! The Green Teens Program is an essential part of our urban greening model that provides job training to local high school students, particularly from historically underserved neighborhoods. The Green Teens Assistant will help with the scheduling, management, and daily logistics of supervising up to four Green Teens during the fall planting and pruning season, September 21 - December 14, 2024. This is a temporary, part-time position with a typical schedule of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturdays for a total of eight hours per week. We're proud to partner with San Francisco Public Works to make the new street tree nursery a success and to train the next generation of urban forest stewards!
The Public Works Street Tree Nursery, which opened last fall in the South of Market neighborhood, already is putting down roots in the community. In collaboration with nonprofit partner, Friends of the Urban Forest, the New Roots workforce development program provides community members with apprenticeship opportunities in street tree stewardship. Four participants from San Francisco’s disadvantaged neighborhoods have completed the program and this month the latest cohort began work at the nursery. The program, which launched last December, offers young adults, 18 to 26 years old, training and hands-on work experience in nursery operations, tree planting and tree care. The program curriculum includes introductory botany and ecology courses, resume workshops, career counseling and communication training. The program also works with the YWCA and the Bill Sorro Housing Program, a local affordable housing advocacy group, to offer financial literacy training and affordable housing assistance workshops to help meet participants’ needs. The trees and plants cultivated at the nursery will in turn be used to continue greening San Francisco neighborhoods. New Roots is funded by the California Natural Resources Agency, the state Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the City and County of San Francisco through a Cal Fire grant. Participants earn $19.95 an hour. The introduction of the New Roots program coincided with the opening of the Street Tree Nursery. Developed on a 14,000-square-foot plot of underutilized Caltrans land, the nursery is situated underneath the I-80 freeway, off of Fifth Street, between Harrison and Bryant streets. One recent afternoon, the four newest participants were out weeding, removing green waste and pruning in the nursery garden. They’ve been studying nursery essentials, such as proper plant feeding and soil mixtures, cataloging nursery plant and tool inventories and keeping pests and contaminants out of the nursery environment. Public Works Director Carla Short, a trained arborist, said she is pleased to see New Roots participants gain practical skills they may one day be able to apply to full-time positions in the public and nonprofit sectors. “The New Roots program is an example of Public Works’ commitment to grow a strong workforce,” Short said. “These young people are poised to be the next generation of leaders in green science and technology, infrastructure, as well as planning and design of open spaces. “Our gardeners and public service aides,” she added, “have mentored them, along with Friends of the Urban Forest’s leadership, in gaining practical skills that will benefit them in their education and career endeavors.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQk-sfdA California Natural Resources Agency #SFPublicWorks #LoveOurCity #Sustainability #Environment #Trees #WorkforceDevelopment #Career #Work #Nature #SanFrancisco

Did you know that when you plant trees, you are a land 🌳 AND an ocean 🌊 steward? Deforestation and burning fossil fuels cause excessive amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. The excess CO2 affects things that can negatively impact marine mammals and humans (e.g. sea level rise, food supply, habitat loss). 🌳 Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 🌳 Trees release oxygen 🌳 Tree stabilize water runoff (which prevents harmful algae blooms that can hurt marine ecosystems) We’re all connected — Trees, marine mammals, and humans💚 Last week’s collaboration between Friends of the Urban Forest and The Marine Mammal Center at the Bayview tree planting (9 of their summer interns volunteered) was the inspiration for this image.
