How do you fall into opportunities as an adult? Probably some version of i) know people, ii) take a shot at a new growth area, or iii) get lucky. We’ve known for years how neighborhoods should help create opportunities. As Tom Friedman wrote in 2017, “The way we lift American workers is not by building higher walls, but rather stronger communities — where business, philanthropies, the local school system and local government forge adaptive coalitions to enable every worker to engage in lifelong learning and every company to access global markets and every town to attract the smart risk-takers who start companies. That is exactly what is happening in America’s best communities, and the job of government is to scale it, and the job of big business is to defend it.” But in the more than 1,000 environmental justice communities across the country where there is concentrated poverty and limited access to high-growth industries, daily life does not feel as if opportunity is baked in everywhere. Beyond clean air and water (which needs work too...) how will injections from new green economy funds help to boost access to economic opportunity in these neighborhoods and fundamentally change how they feel? Last week, with Dream.Org, at RE+, we connected with some of the organizations that are primed to use renewable energy infrastructure, workforce commitments and IRA funds to bring more opportunities to the communities that need a boost. Our team at Frontline Gig is gearing up to help deepen these connections and support all the new partnerships and collaborations that are underway or in the pipeline. Service-focused apprenticeships like the Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps and the Maryland Corps/Service Year provide critical networking and skills-building experiences that help young people build a career. Check out Hansel's story and learn more about the Maryland Service Year: https://lnkd.in/e2sM6vk8 #jobalert #nowhiring #job #gethired #jobopening #career #careerchange #greenjobs #maryland #baltimore #youth

Meet Hansel. He didn’t become a statistic. He’s heading to the Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps! Our team at Frontline Gig recruited Hansel and guided his application and onboarding into the program. But our efforts stand on the prior investments made by organizations like Youth Opportunity Baltimore and his family. When Hansel was a wee lad, his mom and dad pushed him into every available environmental program for kids. Your kid probably didn’t stack the community service hours in high school that Hansel did. He graduated with more than 800 hours of community service. But he didn’t go on to become an environmental hero just yet. In fact, he got derailed for a bit because he didn’t always hang out with the right people. Eventually, he found his way back with Youth Opportunity Baltimore - a Mayor's Office Initiative. He says that the organization showed him a different way and gave him the confidence he needed to take a different path. By the time he saw Frontline Gig’s ad for a paid gap year with the Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps, he was primed and ready to try something new. I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing young man's journey. We’ve also scooped him up for the next few weeks as a Frontline Ambassador. He will help us reach more young people like him who are ready for their next shot. Do you know any young men like Hansel who are ready for their next opportunity? They may be eligible for a similar program - the Maryland Corps/Service Year launched by Gov. Wes Moore last year. Our team at Frontline Gig is on board to help more young people like Hansel use Climate Corps and Service Year opportunities to build the lifelong networks needed to launch careers in any area. Most students say college should be preparing them for a job or career they love, even above having a job or career that pays well or finding a job quickly after graduation. But far fewer say their college is effectively preparing them for that.
This survey should certainly sound the alarm bell for colleges around career awareness and the kinds of careers college students are looking for. ‘A career you love’ took priority over salary although the response to how quickly job placement occurs may speak to financial urgency. The most startling note for me was the role parents play in career choice. Most parents do not have the wide lens that career starters need. Colleges must provide the broader applications of a program (s) of study. They should be advising early on about double majors, lucrative minors and strategic work experiences. Parents can add their opinion-and network-but if we leave the career guidance job to parents we are severely limiting opportunity for too many students. #workingnation

We have to make work-based learning available to all college students. Paid internships, registered apprenticeships, co-ops and including real employer problems in the curriculum provide options that fit every college and major. No one will doubt the ROI of quality academics + work-based learning experiences #workingnation
Paid #internships are not only beneficial to bridging a student’s college experience into the #workforce, they also provide upward economic mobility. Even employers recognize their return on investment. However, there are still so many challenges and gaps when attaining and completing a paid internship. Our CEO, Stephen Moret, and New York Times Bestselling author Jeff Selingo, shared their thoughts with Fast Company. https://lnkd.in/euPS8vUN
More than half of Americans no longer believe college is worth the cost. Paid internships could help
