About us

The Fry Foundation Board of Directors recognizes that we are living in a moment of dynamic change in Chicago and in philanthropy. With those changes, the meaning and intention behind words and phrases can evolve, providing us with an opportunity to use language that reflects new conditions. With that in mind, over the last few months, the Fry Foundation Board has engaged in conversations to update the Foundation’s mission statement. In addition to internal discussions, the Board invited staff and grantee partners to share how they see the Fry Foundation’s values reflected in funding priorities and how the work gets done. Those conversations consistently emphasized the Foundation’s guiding principles of racial equity, learning and fairness. Ultimately the Board wanted an updated mission statement that offered aspirational and hopeful language reflecting the challenges the Fry Foundation aims to address in partnership with our grantees. We are grateful to all those who contributed their time to helping us develop this updated mission statement. Our Mission: The Lloyd A. Fry Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of the people of Chicago faced with challenges rooted in the systems of inequity. We partner with effective nonprofit organizations that share our commitment to building a community in which all individuals and families have the opportunity to thrive. Our vision is a Chicago that offers education, opportunity, health, and hope for all.

Updates

  • Last week, the Obama Foundation invited Lloyd A. Fry Foundation staff and board members to visit the construction site of the future Obama Presidential Center. The center, named after Chicago's own former President Barack Obama, will provide spaces for learning, athletics, art, and community service. The staff and board were also treated to witnessing the installation of the new 83-foot glass artwork called "Uprising of the Sun" by Ethiopian-born artist, Julie Mehretu, on the building's north facade.   The Lloyd A. Fry Foundation is excited for the opening of the center in the near future, bringing programming to the residents of Chicago, the nation, and abroad!

Lloyd A. Fry Foundation and Forefront (Illinois) invite you to a special film screening of Shame of Chicago, Shame of the Nation, a five-part documentary series examining the systemic housing segregation in our city and suburbs throughout the 20th century. The series shows how these policies provided the model for other American cities and towns, such that the wealth gap between Blacks and whites deepened throughout the country. This is more than just a documentary series. It’s an urgent educational tool that will open eyes, join hearts, spark debate, and inspire action. Each episode is designed to stand alone for classroom and community use, as it unfurls a key part of a riveting larger history. See the link below to register for the series. https://lnkd.in/gUJmdjJB

In Memorium of Geoffrey Banks It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our esteemed colleague, Geoffrey Banks, Senior Program Officer at the Chicago Commitment of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Geoffrey's passing last week has left a void in our hearts, in Chicago’s communities and in the national field of arts funding that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Geoffrey was not only a colleague but also a friend and collaborator who brought warmth, insight, and sincerity to everything he touched. Originally, a community organizer, Geoffrey’s dedication to advancing the field of arts funding towards a more racially equitable and just future was courageous. His influence was profoundly felt in our collective efforts to empower communities through participatory grantmaking and other strategies. Geoffrey's impact was evident in his contributions, notably in the groundbreaking 2022 webinar, "Arts Funders Sharing Power: Participatory Grantmaking and Our Field," which kickstarted a transformative learning series. His remarkable generosity of spirit and personal commitment to inclusivity resonated deeply, inspiring all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Geoffrey's leadership extended beyond his professional endeavors. His invaluable presence as an essential member of the 2024 GIA Conference Planning Committee illuminated his wisdom, humor, and kind spirit. Geoffrey was one of the colleagues who took the lead in supporting GIA to bring our conference to San Juan for the first time in 2023. In the wake of his passing, we extend our sincerest condolences to Geoffrey's family, community, and colleagues. Though his physical presence may be gone, his legacy of compassion, advocacy, and dedication to equity will continue to inspire and guide us in our shared mission. Please visit the full post on our Reader site to learn more about how to express your condolences and honor Geoffrey's memory: https://bit.ly/49yNXRs
