The Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine (BSSM) is an interdisciplinary department that contributes to the mission of the College of Medicine through research, teaching, and service. We emphasize the influence of individual, interpersonal, and community factors on health, in the context of social and societal forces. Our work integrates community partnership with principles and methods from behavioral sciences, social sciences, and the humanities to advance knowledge and promote health, especially for the underserved.

Kesnold Mesidor, Ph.D., and Yuxia Wang finds 64% experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), with 23% showing signs of depression, and 11% faced psychosocial challenges. New research from Samantha Goldfarb, megan deichen hansen, Jessica Day, MPH, Joedrecka Brown Speights, MD, George Rust, & Jeff Harman spotlights the slow, uneven progress in reducing the Black-White infant mortality gap in the U.S. Findings from 2008-2018 saw the disparity in 8 states worsen, while 24 states improved slightly, underscoring the urgent action needed to prevent Black infant deaths.
