  • At Hiphen we strive to make phenotyping operations frictionless so farmers and researchers can focus on the higher value their efforts can bring to the agricultural community. Alfred North Whitehead (1861 – 1947) was an English mathematician and philosopher. He is best known as the defining figure of the philosophical school known as process philosophy, which today has found application to a wide variety of disciplines, including agriculture, theology, ecology, physics, biology, and economics. His musings on perception can be found in the mathematical underpinnings of the algorithms that drive modern the modern advances of AI and ML.

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐙𝐄 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 Over the years, Hiphen has begun stacking technology to realize the value of a range of tools accessible to researchers and finding synergies between image acquisition vectors (#satellite, #drones, phenomobiles, IoT, smart phones etc.), sensors (spectral, 3D, thermal), hardware (tractor mounted sensor arrays to fully automated phenotyping robots), and software to deliver more powerful insights and make these innovations more accessible to crop researchers. Shane Thomas in Upstream Ag Insights talks about how many innovative tools for agriculture don't realize thier full potential unless paired with other technologies that together can actually address the problems that need solving. He uses the iPhone as an example of a game changing solution (pocket communication and computing) was developed from a stack of technologies. "It is difficult to make meaningful changes without stacking numerous technologies together. Think about even just a few components of the iPhone— Apple took cellular technology, layered in a GPS technology, and then they added forms of capacitance for the touchscreen. Then Apple layered on a brand-new type of glass (Gorilla Glass) that was extra strong. Great products and tools come from integrating various technologies together." John Deere Solinftec https://lnkd.in/eMhTNhQD

  • 𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐈𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 "𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍" 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 From jeff Desjardins in the visual capitalist I have found myself to be fortunate through my career working on new technologies in agriculture- many years in biologicals and now in image analytics tools for agriculture - both still maturing tools and technology. Productive competition is a critical force to hone business efficiency, but some competition is unproductive and hinders innovation. As tech and tools mature ,"green space" fills in, it is important to use a wide range of tools to diffuse unproductive competition by fueling innovation and staying creative. I enjoyed this little read. "As venture capitalist Peter Thiel once put it, “competition is for losers”. It’s inevitable that every company must be out there battling for market share, but you don’t really want to be in a situation where the competition is so stiff that any potential upside is eroded away in the process—―a scenario known as perfect competition in economics. To avoid perfect competition, companies must strive to build an economic moat that gives them a sustainable competitive advantage over time. While these protective moats can arise from a number of different sources, in today’s information economy they most often arise from the power of innovation." doblin peter Thiel larry Keeley helen Walters ryan Pikkel brian Quinn #innovation #productstrategy product development and mangement association https://lnkd.in/e_yR2yQ

  • LEGOS TELL THE TALE @andreas von der heydt This visualization kind of stood me on my heals with its descriptive power! I've been reading Hybrid by Noel Kingsbury on plant breeding and he has talked about Mendel's findings - they were simplified, but captured the basic underlying stucture of the underlying drivers of crop genetics. Of course crop genetics is more complicated, but the simple story told by Mendel has stood the test of time - just as the lego pinnicale of the lego house is biased by the analysts limitations and design choices, it is still a story that everyone can talk much more clearly about - even they disagree with the conclusion/design. https://lnkd.in/eUwKN2KU #dataviz #datavisualization #datavizualization

We didn't work on this project directly, but offer it as an example of how the application of intensive phenotyping can help address some of the challenges facing 21st century agriculture. From @Albert Schulthess et al. "Searching for the needle in the haystack: beneficial variation for some key agriculture-relevant traits is rare among exotic/old wheat varities stored at genebanks but can be rescued thanks to genomics, intensive phenotyping, crosses with modern cultivars and data science! A joint work between public research and the breeding industry that started 8 to 9 years ago! You can find more details of our approach in our Nature Genetics publication": https://lnkd.in/gufzBsFG "The great efforts spent in the maintenance of past diversity in genebanks are rationalized by the potential role of plant genetic resources (PGR) in future crop improvement—a concept whose practical implementation has fallen short of expectations. Here, we implement a genomics-informed prebreeding strategy for wheat improvement that does not discriminate against nonadapted germplasm. We collect and analyze dense genetic profiles for a large winter wheat collection and evaluate grain yield and resistance to yellow rust (YR) in bespoke core sets. Breeders already profit from wild introgressions but PGR still offer useful, yet unused, diversity. Potential donors of resistance sources not yet deployed in breeding were detected, while the prebreeding contribution of PGR to yield was estimated through ‘Elite × PGR’ F1 crosses. Genomic prediction within and across genebanks identified the best parents to be used in crosses with elite cultivars whose advanced progenies can outyield current wheat varieties in multiple field trials."  #sustainableagriculture #research #genomics SANDEEP KALE @fang lui @yusheng zhao @norman philipp Maximilian Rembe @ulrike beukert Albrecht Serfling Axel Himmelbach @jorg fuchs @markus oppermann Stephan Weise @philipp Boeven Johannes Schacht Prof. Dr. Friedrich Longin @sonja Kollers Nina Pfeiffer Viktor Korzun Matthias Lange @uw scholz Nils Stein @martin mascher @jochen Reif Nature Source Genetics https://lnkd.in/ewaP-kte

Why A Plan Is Not A Strategy Credits to Howie Chan, follow him for more impactful content. ------ Here's the original post: A strategy is NOT a plan. Here are 5 ways they are different: 1/Purpose and Scope → Plan: Detailed and prescriptive. → Strategy: High-level and directional. 2/ Flexibility and Adaptation → Plan: More rigid and structured. → Strategy: Flexible and adaptable. 3/ Focus on Competitive Environment → Plan: Inside focused to achieve specific goals. → Strategy: Outside-oriented, defining a unique value. 4/ Long-term vs. Short-term Orientation → Plan: Short-term focused, immediate steps. → Strategy: Long-term in nature, sustainable over time. 5/ Level of Uncertainty → Plan: Concerned with current known variables. → Strategy: Higher uncertainty. Intuition and logic. PS. What other ways are they different? ------- Follow Business Infographics to learn from the best visuals.
