Swiss biodiversity crisis denial is driven by political and financial interests It’s official. “The state of Swiss biodiversity is alarming and continues to decline.” So warns the Swiss Academy of Sciences. The government however doesn’t want the public to know. And for good reason. On 22 September the Swiss electorate heads to the polls to decide whether to allocate more space and funding to biodiversity. The initiative, which would see the constitution modified, is opposed by a broad alliance spearheaded by the Minister for the Environment. Federal Councillor, Albert Rösti, would prefer not to speak of a biodiversity crisis. Neither should the public. So the offending warning was ordered deleted from the pamphlet sent out to each voter. The head of the Swiss farmers' Association is also in denial. Messrs Rösti and Ritter and Co. are sowing metaphorical seeds of doubt in the form of falsehoods and facts taken out of context, a tactic used to great effect by the tobacco and fossil fuel industries. Success stories are cherry picked, enhanced and propagated to drown out multiple and repeated failures. Dismal assessments and data are softened with euphemisms. Biodiversity is not “being lost”, it is “changing” and such Orwellian Newspeak is taken up by the mainstream media. The debate no longer centres on how best to address the biodiversity crisis but whether there is a crisis at all. Species and habitats are admittedly under pressure, but they have already recovered, it is claimed. While some species like generalists and those no longer hunted might be better off today than 30 years ago, they are still worse off than 80 years ago and specialist species are struggling. Neither is the government or the agricultural sector doing nearly enough to promote biodiversity. Funds are lacking and the 2012 Swiss Biodiversity Strategy's objectives have been missed. Much of the agricultural land currently set aside (19%) and subsidised for biodiversity is unsuitable for farming. It doesn't attract much biodiversity either and the figure drops to 2% on the densely populated central plain. Attempts to raise it to 3.5% were blocked by the agricultural lobby. The oft-repeated claim that 30% of Swiss territory would be off limits references the 30x30 target set by the Kunming-Montreal agreement, ratified by Switzerland. At just 14% currently (compared to 26% in Europe), Switzerland still has a way to go to fulfil its commitments. Such areas are anyway rarely placed off limits and access is only denied if it is shown to impact biodiversity. Food security is admittedly a problem however. Switzerland only grows around half the food needed to feed its population, but only because 60% of arable land is used to feed livestock. The heavily subsidised animal husbandry sector however prefers to blame biodiversity measures. Half of all Swiss habitats and a third of its species are threatened. Politicians may well obfuscate and lie, but the data doesn’t.

Gemäss neuster CSS-Gesundheitsstudie geben über alle Altersgruppen hinweg enorme 68% der Befragten an, häufig erschöpft und müde zu sein. Und das Erleben von Leistungsdruck nimmt zu. Das hat garantiert komplexe Ursachen. Zugleich haben wir alle einen gewissen Freiheitsgrad, wie wir mit den Ansprüchen und Herausforderungen im Leben umgehen. Was ist ihre Lebensphilosophie? Personally experienced vitality is at an all-time low in Switzerland. According to the latest CSS Health Study, an enormous 68% of respondents across all age groups say they are often exhausted and tired. And the experience of pressure to perform is increasing. This is guaranteed to have complex causes. At the same time, we all have a certain degree of freedom in how we deal with the demands and challenges in life. DEI beginnt individuell. Leben kommt nämlich unweigerlich in allen Farben. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel Hindernisse und abschüssige "Hanglagen". Sie tragen womöglich gerade zur Vitalität bei. Auf jeden Fall braucht Leben Lebens-Kunst. Und daran mangelt es in Lehrplänen und in Lebensentwürfen des konstant zunehmenden "Erfolgs". Entsprechende Angebote sind daher ein Grundpfeiler von fullrainbow. DEI begins individually. Life inevitably comes in all colors. This includes obstacles and slippery slopes, for example. They may just contribute to vitality. In any case, life requires the art of living. And there is a lack of this in curricula and in life plans of constantly increasing “success”. In Sachen DEI sind wir also besonders spezialisiert für "Behinderung". Und auch für "LGBTIQ". Die Lage hier ist nämlich schnell brüchig, auch in der Schweiz. Und weltweit sehr divers, mit Fort- aber auch Rückschritten und je nach Ort wortwörtlich lebensgefährlich. Auch diese betriebliche Diversität ist nicht einfach "gegeben". When it comes to DEI, we are therefore particularly specialized in “disability”. And also for “LGBTIQ”. The situation here can quickly become fragile, also in Switzerland. And it is very diverse worldwide, with progress but also setbacks and, depending on the location, literally life-threatening.
