We envision a future in which any U.S. student who dreams of studying abroad will be able to participate.
About us
The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the US study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs. FEA was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2010 to address the need for an independent study abroad scholarship provider. Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of US undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich diversity of the US population. Since 2010, FEA has awarded $1.7 million in scholarships to 425 undergraduates, helping students from all over the United States follow their dreams abroad. FEA relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as strategic partners in the field to support these students. The Fund for Education Abroad is an IIE Generation Study Abroad Commitment Partner, pledging $1 Million to increase the number and diversity of undergraduate Americans studying abroad by 2019. After nine years of sustained growth, FEA is poised to invest more deeply in the international education of the next generation, sustainably scaling our efforts so that our scholars may work to increase global understanding, give back to their communities, and mentor future generations of FEA Scholars.

Yesterday was a GREAT day! Thank you to Office of International Programs - Elizabeth City State University for organizing a visit that allowed us to connect with students, staff and faculty members about study abroad. ECSU's approach to ed abroad is one to be adopted--access, inclusion and information are key to getting more students to consider and pursue study abroad. Thank you for allowing us to see your work in action, Andre P. Stevenson and the amazing Study Abroad Ambassadors!
We were excited to have Ms. Angela Schaffer, Executive Director with Fund for Education Abroad and Ms. Priya Sivaraj, Study Abroad Coordinator at University of Sydney visit with us yesterday. They interacted with students in a couple of classes and spent a lot of time interacting with our Study Abroad Ambassadors, sharing information about funding opportunities with FEA, as well as study abroad programs offered at the University of Sydney. It was a lot of fun having them here, especially during our Homecoming Week! Shout-out to several of our Ambassadors for being present, sharing their insights, being open to learning more, and making plans to share information learned from interacting Angie and Priya with their fellow Vikings!! #ECSUAbroad #ECSU #HBCU #internationaleducation #LetsGoGlobal #FEA #USydney Kim V. Today, we honor and celebrate the diverse cultures, knowledge, and resilience of Indigenous peoples around the world. Indigenous communities have deep connections to the lands where many study abroad programs take place, contributing rich perspectives that shape global understanding. 👥✨ At The Fund for Education Abroad, we are committed to learning from and with Indigenous communities, acknowledging the histories of the places we explore, and respecting the wisdom passed down through generations. Indigenous students remain underrepresented in global education—with only 0.4% of U.S. study abroad students identifying as Native American or Alaska Native according to a 2023 Institute of International Education (IIE) Open Doors report (https://lnkd.in/gFKWuy2p). We strive to create more inclusive opportunities for all. 🌎🤝 Today and every day, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and their ongoing struggles for recognition and rights. Let’s use this day to reflect on the importance of cultural preservation, honoring Indigenous voices, and fostering mutual respect wherever our journeys take us! 🌱💬 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #StudyAbroad #InternationalEducation #GlobalLearning #CulturalAppreciation #IndigenousRights #Respect #Solidarity #LandAcknowledge
