Great article by our Chair, William Silverman, on the importance of Pro Bono work.

We are grateful to the NYS Legislature, Senate sponsor Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Assembly sponsor Landon Dais, Esq., Governor Hochul, Chief Judge Wilson, and Chief Administrative Judge Zayas for supporting the increase in the number of judges for New York State's Family Courts. For decades increasing the number of family court judges to serve the people of New York was a battle fraught with political gamesmanship. Now all have acted in concert to ensure more resources to address the critical matters before family courts in our state. The Legislation S.9839/A.10540, now law, increases the number of family and civil court judges throughout New York State by 28. Two will be assigned to Nassau County, two will be assigned to Suffolk County, and one additional judge will be assigned in each of the following counties: Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Erie, Jefferson, Rensselaer, Rockland and Westchester counties. The legislation will also add 16 judges for New York City, including citywide positions that will be distributed across the five boroughs at the discretion of the Mayor of the City of New York. Modern Courts has long advocated for reforms to NYS Family Courts. Take a look at our website for reports, history and recommendations.

Want to see important and consequential trials?
Seeking your 3-minute input! It remains a great frustration that New Yorkers and others in the country cannot see important and consequential trials taking place in NYS. Our present law prohibits cameras in the NY trial courts. This year we can change that. Please make three phone calls (leave a message if you receive a service or simply offer the below to whoever answers the call). Here is the Simple Message: "I am (name), I live in New York. I strongly support cameras in our courts and the passage of A712a. (Add your own words if you wish). Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie : 518-455-3791 Judiciary Chair Charles Lavine : 518-455-5456 Your Assembly members (look here) Please let me know about your experience making the call - simply email kronstadt@moderncourts.org And read our report....and forward this message! https://lnkd.in/d7nQ4WWK
