Health is everybody's business.

About us

Our mission is to incubate innovative public health initiatives that lead to improved health for all New Yorkers. The City of New York created the Fund for Public Health in New York City in 2002 as an independent, nonprofit organization that connects the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene with public and private sector partners to build public health programs that make our city healthier and safer. Since its founding in 2002, the Fund has raised more than $500 million in public and private funding for 440 grants to support programs developed with the Health Department. The Fund incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by the Health Department to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation. The Fund helps the Health Department do more—more quickly—to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

FPHNYC and The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are working to reduce pregnancy-associated death among Black women and birthing people in NYC by 10% by 2030. A key step to help meet this goal is to launch – with your support – the Maternal Home Collaborative (MHC)   Designed to address the root cause of Black maternal health inequities – structural racism – MHC, a place-based pilot, will provide a coordinated and comprehensive implementation of maternal health services, centering Black women and birthing people and their infants in all aspects of care.   You can be an Amplifier, a Champion, or an Investor (or all three!) in support of the MHC.   Learn more: www.fphnyc.org/mhcm/   P.S. Stay tuned for Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17), as we have a full week planned around video excerpts from our recent convening and learn about how YOU can get involved to improve maternal health in NYC!

  • Thank you to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for leading these crucial conversations about maternal health disparities. FPHNYC is honored to have helped support this important event and remains committed to advancing efforts to reduce maternal mortality and address disparities affecting Black women and birthing people in NYC.

We hosted a convening of the Maternal Mortality Review Committee, gathering professionals from government, academia, and advocacy medicine to encourage open discussion on how to reduce maternal mortality across New York City. The committee reviewed 241 pregnancy-associated deaths in New York City between 2016 to 2020 in order to recommend strategies to reduce the number of deaths and address inequities that lead to Black women being four times as likely to die than White women. Chief Executive Officer at Fund for Public Health NYC

The Fund for Public Health in NYC (FPHNYC) has a long history of advancing public health for all New Yorkers. Since our founding in 2002, we’ve raised more than $550 million in public and private funding for more than 450 projects, making New York City healthier and safer for all. FPHNYC is both an independent nonprofit organization and a strategic partner of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (the Health Department). We are proud that since our founding, every NYC Commissioner of Health during their tenure has served as the Chair of the organization’s Board of Directors. New York City Health Commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, announced this week that he will be stepping down in January 2025. Dr. Vasan has been a visionary leader, and during his tenure, the City of New York has made innovative new investments in the collective health and well-being of New Yorkers, including the long-term public health agenda HealthyNYC, which is now codified in law. In my 15 years leading FPHNYC, I have worked closely with the Health Commissioners of three administrations. I know that each of these exceptional individuals would agree with me when I say the core strength of the agency – founded more than 150 years ago – is its staff of nearly 7,000 public health professionals. All of us at FPHNYC are proud to call them colleagues and look forward to continuing to work with them as we have for more than two decades. FPHNYC, the Health Department, and our many community-based partner organizations remain committed to being response-ready for the advent of health emergencies like COVID-19 and to making progress in addressing long-term health challenges. With the continued support of philanthropic organizations, individuals, and the private sector, we will further reduce health disparities and make it possible for more New Yorkers to realize their full health potential.
