As I listen to the discussions unfolding at #COP16, one thing is clearer than ever: integrating agroecology into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) isn’t just a nice idea—it’s essential to ensuring we protect and boost biodiversity around the world. Industrial #FoodSystems are one of the largest drivers of biodiversity loss, contributing to the climate crisis and threatening ecosystems worldwide. This new report reveals how agroecology can shift the tide by aligning with the Global Biodiversity Framework targets. By embedding agroecological practices, policymakers can: ✅ Reduce fossil fuel dependency ✅ Support small-scale farmers and Indigenous communities ✅ Enhance biodiversity and climate resilience This #COP16, it’s crucial to prioritize agroecology to protect both nature and people. As global leaders continue to gather at #COP16 in Colombia, and soon at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, we have a critical opportunity to tackle biodiversity loss and transform our food systems. Agroecology offers a powerful solution—not only for restoring ecosystems but also for empowering marginalized communities and advancing social equity. In a recent op-ed for Devex, Anna Lappé, along with Hans R Herren (Biovision Foundation) and Marcela Quintero (CIAT), highlights how agroecological practices can help countries achieve biodiversity targets while addressing #SustainableDevelopmentGoals related to hunger, poverty, and climate action. Centering agroecology in our food systems strengthens resilience and supports sustainable livelihoods.
