The City of Gainesville, Georgia was proud to partake in Tuesday’s Harrison Village groundbreaking ceremony hosted by the Gainesville Housing Authority and Paces Preservation Partners LLC. Attendees heard from community leaders, including our very own Mayor Sam Couvillon, and those integral to the project prior to breaking ground on Harrison Village phase No. 1. Upon completion, Harrison Village will serve as an affordable rental housing community for families. This preservation project, in partnership with Paces Preservation Partners, will boast 120 new affordable apartments priced for renters earning under 80% of the area’s median income. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 Gainesville Housing Authority (GHA) is an advocate and provider for affordable housing for Gainesville families. Working with the City of Gainesville, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other organizations, GHA provides life resources and opportunities not only to residents, but to the entire community. (GPF), which allows those interested to keep their tax dollars at home by redirecting funds to the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) rather than being sent to the Georgia Department of Revenue for distribution. The Law Enforcement Strategic Support Act, or LESS Crime Act, provides for tax credits for certain contributions made by taxpayers to certain local law enforcement foundations. “This legislation allows businesses and individual taxpayers to claim a tax credit for their charitable contributions to qualified law enforcement foundations, such as the Gainesville Police Foundation,” said Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish, who led efforts to establish GPF for the benefit of existing GPD donors. This dollar-for-dollar tax credit program allows single filers to claim up to $5,000, married couples up to $10,000, S corporations and partnerships up to $10,000, and qualified C corporations up to 75% of their state tax liability up to $3 million per calendar year. (June 18, 2024) – The City of Gainesville, Georgia was named one of five grant recipients to benefit from the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, which will contribute more than $10.3 million in infrastructure development, supporting nearly 312 housing units across Georgia. "We've already seen incredible results from our Rural Workforce Housing grants helping Georgians live where they work," said Gov. Brian Kemp, who made the announcement June 13. "This latest round of investments will further that impact in rural Georgia as our state sees even more historic opportunity and record economic development. I want to thank the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and OneGeorgia Authority board for making these grants available to communities that will benefit from them most." Gainesville will receive $2.5 million for necessary drainage infrastructure improvements for two local developments: the Gainesville Nonprofit Development Foundation and The Norton Agency. The former plans to construct 17-23 single-family homes while the latter will construct 66 rental housing units in the area south of Jekyll Brewing and the old train depot near Marler Street. Announced in the Governor’s 2023 State of the State Address, the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative is helping to spur the development of critically needed workforce housing in communities across the state. The Georgia General Assembly approved $35.7 million to start the initiative in 2023. Kemp requested $50 million in the Amended Fiscal Year 2024 budget and an additional $6 million for Fiscal Year 2025 to further the impact of the program. The additional funds were approved and signed into law earlier this year. This fourth round of successful grantees continues to demonstrate meaningful changes in workforce housing for these five communities and the transformative benefits of the overall program. "Demand for workforce housing continues to increase across the state as our economy grows," said DCA Commissioner Christopher Nunn. "The OneGeorgia Authority is pleased to support these communities that are pursuing deliberate workforce housing strategies." Mayor Sam Couvillon said the City-owned property where the housing will be built is currently prone to flooding, and upgrades will resolve drainage issues and allow the housing projects to move forward. “We are trying to do our part to provide affordable housing in our community,” Couvillon said. The online Accela Citizen Access Portal will house applications and records required by the City and Hall County Government to acquire development permits, commercial building permits, residential building permits and trade permits. The new permitting software is intended to streamline operations, moving the entire process online, while upgrading and simplifying the experience for the applicant. Training courses will focus on development permits, commercial building permits, residential and trade permits, which will include how to apply through the Citizen Access Portal, upload documents and address FAQs.
