Openness has levels to it...how can you go deeper today?

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: November 4, 2024 How open are you with others, really? When I first thought about how open I was with others, I thought I was SUPER open. What that meant to me was: If I have an opinion about something, I’ll tell you whether you want to hear it or not. Yikes. Then I learned that openness has levels. And if your openness includes judgment, then you’re not being as open as you could be. I don’t intend to pretend that I never feel or express judgment; I do. And I know enough to know that when I do, it shows me that I have more inner work to do to no longer judge somebody for their behavior. When I mean judge, I don’t mean simply to discern, but judge as in, “to look down upon.” And I judge things. I used to think that it was not only ok to judge things, but GOOD to judge things, because it helps people understand what’s good or bad, right or wrong. I’ve come to accept that it’s less about what is right and wrong, and more about what is ok and not ok FOR ME. I don’t have to lean on some idea of what others think is good/bad/right/wrong, when I have enough self-acceptance to own my perspective. That’s called self-accountability. It’s the difference between, “That is bad” and “I don’t like that.” But openness goes deeper than that. Underneath “I don’t like that” can emerge, “When this happens, I feel sad/hurt/angry/etc.” And those emotions - those emotions don’t actually stem from what somebody did; the emotions stem from the story in my head about what their behavior means…about me. Damn. Talk about self-accountability. It showed me that I can go from judging others to actually uncovering how my own perceived inadequacies are creating a story in my head. A story so painful that I’d rather deflect that pain by blaming or judging “you.” I believe this is the most important work we can do as humans. It is what will stop the pervasive “otherism” that leads to so much suffering, and will bring us closer together as we can connect on how we’re far more similar than we are different. #selfacceptance #selfaccountability #selfawareness #authenticleadership #personalgrowth

I've always viewed LinkedIn as a professional platform, and that's often led me to think that I only want to post things here that are "professional." But we are human beings, and I'm a huge advocate for bringing humanity back to organizations. We are whole beings, regardless of where we are. For that reason, I'm choosing to share a moment with you from my weekend. I attended a music festival that encourages dressing up for Halloween, and the vibe of the community there is: ACCEPTANCE. It's the kind of vibe I wish more organizations practiced. Letting people be who they are - always staying respectful of each other, and letting people express themselves in ways that feel fun and authentic.
