October has arrived and is bringing cooler weather to some growing zones. Crisp, foggy mornings, and colder nights. This month will also bring the first frost to some northern zones, signaling the end of the growing season for some. If you are in a warmer zone, your garden may still be growing strong - but for some of us, it is time to start wrapping things up. Here are a few October gardening tasks to get started on in the coming weeks: 🌱Cut plants that have stopped producing where their stem meets the soil, leaving plant roots in the soil for added nutrients. 🌱Divide bushy perennial herbs into smaller bunches and replant in different areas or place in a pot to bring indoors. 🌱If you are planning to grow garlic next season, now is the time to plant your bulbs. Choose the largest, healthiest bulbs for planting. 🌱Start planting spring flowering bulbs like tulips, crocus and daffodils. 🌱Prune back rose bushes, adding a layer of mulch or dried leaves around the base for protection during the upcoming winter. 🌱Cut back perennial plants and divide if necessary, transplanting to other areas around the garden. 🌱Bring any houseplants back indoors before the first frost hits, repotting if necessary with fresh soil to reduce the risk of bringing in pests. 🌱Sharpen, clean and repair any gardening tools that have been used during the growing season, so they are ready to store. #gardensoxx #gardeningtasks #easygardening #gardeningforall #fallgarden #gardeningtips #homesteading #organicgardening #octobergardening

Nasturtium brings a pop of color to the home garden with its bright orange and yellow hues. These beautifully cascading flowering plants are easy to grow and will typically self-seed and regrow every year. They make an excellent companion plant for the vegetable garden as they will draw pests away from fruiting crops and attract important pollinators and beneficial insects. They are also edible, packing a nutritional punch as an excellent source of vitamin C and anti-viral. When used to make tea, they can offer relief from colds, sinus congestions and other respiratory ailments which make them a valuable medicinal plant for the upcoming cold and flu season. With the school year now in full swing, incorporating a simple gardening project into the curriculum offers children an opportunity to learn something new and gives them a chance to get out of the classroom, and do something different from their typical day-to-day studies. Did you know that teaching kids how to garden offers them a wide range of benefits? Getting outside not only has important health benefits, but also fosters a connection to nature that is increasingly important in our modern society. Gardening projects are excellent teaching tools for introducing science and environmental study topics. They can be used to incorporate lessons from core subjects like math, English, social studies, and art. Learning how to grow healthy food can foster the development of positive nutritional attitudes and behaviors; not to mention the physical activity associated with gardening that can help kids develop their motor skills and encourage them to exercise. The social aspect of gardening with their peers can promote the development of important social skills by working cooperatively as a team and taking on leadership roles. GardenSoxx® offers the perfect solution for your school gardening project - allowing you to build a garden on ANY surface, quickly and easily. We make it simple for children to learn, and can also support you with extra resources to help make your school gardening project a success! With September well underway, you may be asking yourself where the summer went...it seems to pass so fast! While September days can still feel like summer, the cooler nights can affect garden crops. Cool-season crops may thrive, but growth might slow down quite a bit for heat-loving plants. Starting your garden cleanup slowly and early will leave you with less to do once the frost sets in... Here are a few things you can plan to get done in September: 🌱Start a slow cleanup, removing any bolted plants, dried up leaves, or spent flower heads. This can reduce the cleanup necessary at end of season. 🌱Save whatever seeds you can for next season - some may need to be dried out first. Store in an airtight jar to preserve them. 🌱As the weather cools, tomatoes may remain green from here on out. Remove green tomatoes from the plant and place in a box to ripen. 🌱Finish harvesting herbs and other summer crops nearing the end of their growth. Preserve what you can by drying, freezing or canning. 🌱Collect the leaves that are beginning to fall and add them to your compost bin, along with any other dry plant cuttings from the garden. 🌱Cut back perennial plants and divide if necessary, transplanting to other areas around the garden. 🌱Plant fall blooms like Chrysanthemums and ornamental kale, along with tulip bulbs that will emerge next spring. 🌱If you are looking to add any trees to your landscape, fall is the best time to plant them and you may even get them at a discount! What garden successes are you celebrating as the season winds down? What will you do differently next season? They are adaptable plants that grow well in most climates and can even be brought indoors as a houseplant. While the plants are popular for their leaves, they actually do produce flowers much later in the summer season, when days begin to shorten, signaling the arrival of fall. Easily grow colorful Coleus in your GardenSoxx® by starting them as seeds, or planting established seedlings after the last frost has passed. Are you growing Coleus in your garden this year? What beautiful color combinations have you enjoyed with this unique plant? Let us know in the comments below. While you may still be in summer harvest mode, it's never too early to start thinking about next growing season! If you have some overripe produce, or if the summer heat has caused some of your plants to bolt, this is the perfect time to start saving some seeds for next year's garden. First, it is important to know what seeds can be saved. It is best to save heirloom seeds, as hybrid seeds may not produce quality plants. Seeds that are easiest to save: Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers, Zucchini, Beans, Lettuce, Some Herbs, and Some Flowers. A few tips to consider: 🌱Only save seeds from healthy plants. These will have the best chance to produce quality produce next year. 🌱Some seed pods should be left on the plant until they are dry (like beans, peas and certain flowers). Others need to be scooped out of the overripened fruit and dried on a paper towel (like tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and cucumbers). The bolted stalks of lettuce or herbs can be snipped off the plant and hung upside down inside a paper bag to allow the seeds to dry and fall into the bottom of the bag. 🌱Make sure seeds are fully dry before storing in an air-tight container. (Test this by squeezing the dried seed with pliers. It should shatter, and not feel spongy.) 🌱Label containers to avoid confusion. Store in a cool, dark place until you are ready to germinate them. Saving your own seeds is a fun experiment and a sustainable step toward self-sufficiency. Do you save seeds from your garden?
