September marks #WomeinMedicineMonth. We’d like to give acknowledgement to some of the Women in Medicine here @GastroRockies who provide exceptional patient care. This includes the initial exam to the in-house pathology lab. We are so proud to have such a strong team of women in medicine. When asked what it means to be a woman in medicine, here are a few responses from our female gastro team. "To be a woman in medicine means that I followed my childhood dream, and I can now inspire my daughters to follow theirs." -Dr. Fayling “As a female physician assistant, we can give female patients a safe space to feel heard and cared for in a unique way. Many patients express their gratitude for having this choice when selecting their provider.” -Emily Marshall PA-C "I'm constantly inspired by the exceptional women in medicine I have the privilege to know and collaborate with." -Dr. Bibiana Steinbauer "Complex procedures can be frightening, so I do my best to put all of my patients at ease. It is rewarding to hear sincere comments from female patients who trust that female physicians understand their unique needs – which may give them added comfort." -Dr. Kelly Zucker

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT- Meet Laura Henningsen, RN, BSN, nurse supervisor at our Denver West location. Big congrats to Laura who recently celebrated 13 years with Gastroenterology of the Rockies. We applaud Laura for her commitment to her patients and teammates. When asked what she enjoys about working for GI of the Rockies, here’s what she said about her role here. “I love working with such an outstanding group of doctors, nurses, techs, and administration. We work well together as a team to take excellent care of patients and we find ways to make work fun along the way.” Laura grew up in Lakewood and says it's meaningful to provide GI care for her community. This level of care includes helping patients prevent colon cancer and offering information to help them understand and control of their gastrointestinal symptoms and disorders. Outside of work, Laura enjoys time with my husband and two kids, ages 6 and 9. “I enjoy hiking, which I can even do sometimes over a lunch break as Denver West is adjacent to hiking trails,” she said. Laura attends church, enjoys traveling and reading. She’s also a big fan of Colorado sports teams—including the Buffs, Broncos and Nuggets. By the way—if you challenge her to a round of cornhole, she will be glad to take you on. Say hello to Laura! #nurse #ginursing #employeespotlight #staffing #gicare #femalegastro

As we continue to celebrate #PrideMonth, we believe everyone deserves access to healthcare. Disparities like access to healthcare and discrimination experienced by #LGBTQ people are considered key factors linked to cancer risk, compared to heterosexual people. National health survey data shows higher rates of smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption in some LGBTQ groups which correlates with cancer risk. This is why routine screenings are so important. #accesstohealthcare

As you set out on your commute to and from work today for "#biketoworkday - we hope everyone stays safe. This annual event entices thousands of #Colorado cyclists to trade their cars for bikes to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Remember to use extra padding - because no one likes that soar feeling after a long day in the bike seat - or an unexpected #hemorrhoid that blossoms overnight. If that sounds familiar, our medical providers are here to help with hemorrhoid treatments.

So many people talk about gut health. So, let's dig in. How much fiber you eat everyday? If you’re like most adults, it’s probably not enough. Consuming about 25-35 grams of fiber per day helps maintain your #colon health because it helps you with regular bowel movements. So, if you care about gut health, remember to take care of your colon. Try to add this these fiber rich foods to your grocery list. Pinto beans, red lentils, raspberries, blueberries, apples. Sprinkle chia and flaxseeds into your Geek yogurts and salads. #highfiber #guthealth

Here's a friendly PSA reminding you to stay cool as summer temps heat up in the Denver metro. Heat stroke is real. Know the signs of heat stroke and aim to lower body temp if these signs sneak up on you. Seek medical attention if you suspect heat stroke! #PSA #summer #summerheat #staycool @nationalweatherservice

In celebration of Juneteenth, let us refocus and think about ways to create a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system. Let’s better understand social determinants of health and the importance of providing culturally competent care. Let’s lean in so we can problem solve and work together. This is how communities pave a path to a future where every individual can have access to health, happiness and a sense of belonging. #accesstohealth #juneteenth #freedom
