Meet Xi, a science manager working on the tokamak at DIII-D National Fusion Facility! These machines use magnetic fields to contain plasma in a donut-shaped configuration at extremely high temperatures to create fusion and we just so happen to have the largest tokamak in the US for Xi to work towards achieving a clean, safe and abundant energy source. DIII-D is operated by General Atomics on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). We may have some future engineers here! Last week, we inspired kids to pursue the exciting world of science and engineering careers at two hands-on workshops for students at X-STEM San Diego hosted by USA Science & Engineering Festival. Engineers from our General Atomics Aeronautical Systems team in additive manufacturing led students on a design exercise using 3D printing while teams from Energy and Electromagnetic Systems demonstrated how to make a simple electromagnet to simulate aircraft launch from a carrier. #GeneralAtomics #FreedomtoExplore #GrowWithGA #STEM
