We are committed to supporting our communities in times of need. In response to a recent fire that impacted Tukurngailnguq School in Stebbins, GCI contributed $5,000 to the regional nonprofit Kawerak, Inc. to assist with transportation costs for students commuting to another nearby school. When it comes to experiencing Juneau, the Hangar on the Wharf has offered locals and visitors alike a true taste of Alaska since 1996. Whether it’s their renowned fish and chips or a dish with an even more unique Alaska flavor (wasabi salmon burger, anyone?), this restaurant is a community staple. At the heart of it all is Reecia Wilson, a lifelong Alaskan who has dedicated herself to making the Hangar a cornerstone of Juneau’s dining scene. Running a restaurant that serves a wide range of customers is no small task, but Reecia and her team make it work. “I’m lucky to have an incredibly talented team around me, and we’re really close-knit,” Reecia says. “Coming out of COVID has been the toughest challenge I’ve faced, but you’ve got to keep pushing forward.” Behind the scenes, GCI plays a pivotal role in ensuring smooth operations at the Hangar. “GCI’s internet has been a game-changer for us, especially during the busy summer months when reliable service is so important,” Reecia notes. “When we do face challenges, GCI’s business support team has always been there to help us get back on track quickly.” Their new handheld point-of-sale (POS) systems have transformed how the restaurant operates. These devices allow servers to take orders directly at the table and send them instantly to the kitchen, streamlining service and reducing wait times. But the success of this new system hinged on having a reliable and fast internet connection which is something that GCI has undeniably provided. Our rural fiber projects have made great progress this year toward closing the digital divide and bringing high-speed, affordable internet to rural communities. The AIRRAQ Network, a partnership between the Bethel Native Corporation and GCI, will bring fiber to 13 communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region. Submarine fiber is currently being deployed in the area as crews work their way from Dillingham to Bethel. GCI crews are also making progress on the Aleutians Fiber Project, which will bring fiber to 12 communities in the region. Construction recently kicked off in Ouzinkie where crews will be digging trenches and installing fiber conduit in preparation for the deployment of fiber-optic cable directly to homes and businesses. We’re so proud of all the hard work our crews have put into these projects and look forward to their continued progress.

“I've been living in Bethel for 18, going on 19 years. It's become home and I've really become a part of the community. They've accepted me as their family member. I love that about Bethel. It’s a true community. When something happens, everybody really comes together. They all join in to help. Whether it’s something tragic or something wonderful, they're all there. It's such a great support system. Bethel might be a small town, but it sure has a big heart. When you get out on the Kuskokwim River, it’s like you're in a different place. I grew up in California when I was younger, and even though the weather was great, it doesn't give you that same feeling as living in Alaska does — where there is a true familial bond. People in Bethel really care and step up for one another. You couldn’t ask for a better place to live. At GCI, I love helping people, especially Bethel’s elders. I enjoy taking the extra time to sit with them and help. I want to continue to be a part of our customer’s great experience. It’s the most rewarding part. Our core group that works at the Bethel GCI store is so fun and our boss is amazing. From Friday morning pump-ups to getting together with our kids, we’re all very family-oriented which is the best part.” Melissa is a Senior Customer Service Sales Specialist for our Bethel retail store and has been at GCI for almost nine years. When Melissa’s not at work, you’ll find her spending time with her daughter and son, going on evening walks and getting together with friends!

For the past 10 years, GCI employees have volunteered with NeighborWorks Alaska to “Paint the Town!” Each year, Paint the Town brings together a team to help paint homes for deserving neighbors, helping to raise neighborhood pride and brighten up the community. A big thank you to all the volunteers and participants who help make this event possible. We’re proud to be a part of this initiative and give back to our neighbors.
