EmpowerMinds Day 2 Pictures are here! ⭐ Our Day 2 started with four different science experiments for the students to conduct, led by Jay Flores! Students also got the opportunity to see some demonstrations from Whisker Technologies’ very own Kenneth Natera. Following the experiments, students participated in a conversation about the “Power of Storytelling”. Students learned about storytelling as a tool to convey their personal experiences and drive positive change in their communities. Students then participated in a discussion about first generation students. In “First Generation: What it Means to Be the First in your Family to Do Anything” , students learned strategies for overcoming obstacles such as cultural expectations and academic pressures while exploring and celebrating the experiences and challenges of being first-generation pioneers within their families and validating the unique journey of first-generation individuals and the significance of their accomplishments. To conclude, Gina Moreno and Gabriela Cervantes led the session “Being Multi-Passionate: How to Make the Most of all the Things you Love”. This conversation focused on guiding participants in identifying and prioritizing their interests, sharing strategies for balancing multiple pursuits, and encouraging participants to embrace their multi-passionate nature as a source of creativity, fulfillment, and personal growth. Here are some of our favorite pictures of EmpowerMinds Day 1! Day 1 began with a conversation led by our very own, Gina Moreno, titled “First Generation Resilience: From Trailblazer to Trendsetter: A First-generation Latina Story” where she drew from her experiences as a first-generation Latina to open the event and connect with the students’ experiences. After the opening session, the students then participated in Jay Flores’ “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science” show where they got to experience a series of experiments to pique their interest in science! After the show, the students participated in two workshops: one led by Gabriela Cervantes and the other, by Benjamín F. Pérez. Gabby’s workshop was centered around resilience and support. Through his session, she taught students about resilience-building techniques and coping strategies tailored for students. She also highlighted the importance of support systems, encouraging students to seek out help when needed and emphasizing self-care practices for mental well-being. In Benjamin’s session, students were introduced to mental health and academic success. This included learning about the connection between mental health and their academic performance as well as challenges that can affect a student’s mental health. The workshop also highlighted cultural influences on mental health by examining stigma and cultural beliefs surrounding mental health. This was especially unique because mental health is still a stigmatized topic amongst Latinos and our workshops were led by 2  Latinos! 💪🏼 Thank you so much to everyone who made Day 1 possible, including our partner Whisker Technologies. We are so happy to share our first event as Generation Pionera! EmpowerMinds summit took place at Decker Middle School in Austin, TX, where over 250 students, faculty and staff  joined us over the span of two days to participate in a science show, a series of hands-on workshops, fun group activities and special guest speakers. With the goal of providing valuable insights and inspiration, reinforcing the importance of pursuing passions in STEM as well as prioritizing mental wellbeing. Our guest speakers covered anything from chemical engineers, scientists, software engineers, social workers, school advisors and social media content creators. This event would not have been possible without our partner: Whisker Technologies and their co-founders Yahaira Cueva and Kenneth Natera as well as the help of our amazing team: Fernanda Sulantay Vargas, Gabriela Cervantes, Benjamín F.
