It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a few weeks since #GSAConnects2024! During the conference we asked Cate Larsen and Ethan Penner about their professional group of geology communicators, AllGneiss Communications, and how they decided to start working together, enjoy! #GSA2024 #AllGneissCommunications #SciComm #GeologyRocks Targeted Film

Another excellent conference organized by The Geological Society: Conferences, Events and Training and sponsored by Geological Society of America (our members enjoy discounts too!)
Have you been thinking about registering for the Planetary Geoscience Conference happening later this year? Registration is OPEN and is free for members of the Geological Society and the Royal Astronomical Society! The Planetary Geoscience Conference is the next conference in the GeoFutures conference series which focuses on the 21st century solutions that geoscientists can offer to global challenges. It aims to bring together researchers, engineers, policymakers, funders, space agencies and government scientists. With contributions from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Government Office for Science (GO-Science), as well as the UK Planetary Forum (UKPF), the Laboratory Analysis for Research into Extraterrestrial Specimens (LARES) consortium and the UK Cosmochemistry Analysis Network (UKCAN); this conference is NOT one to miss. For those attending in person, spaces will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis. Reserve your interest today before in-person spaces sell out! https://lnkd.in/eiha6cnH #GeoFutures24 #PlanetaryScience #PlanetaryGeoscience #Geoscience #Geology #EarthScience #DigitalGeoscience #PlanetScience #UKRI #UKPF #UKCAN #Geolsoc

UWM PhD student Rakiba Sultana recently presented her work on groundwater contamination and the vadose zone at Geological Society of America's GSA Connects 2024.
Presented at Geological Society of America (GSA) meeting 2024 held in Anaheim, CA. My poster focused on how the vadose zone can serve as a major contributor to groundwater contamination during floods. This GSA was more significant since this was the first time my husband, Rajeun Islam and I attended a conference together! His poster addressed methane gas dynamics in peatlands. We also had an amazing opportunity to attend a day-long field work in Coastal Orange County, CA exploring its structural geology and geomorphology. #GSAConnects2024 #groundwater #peatland

MS in Geology at New Mexico State University | BA Environmental Geosciences at Bucknell University with a Minor in French
Last month, I had the pleasure of presenting a poster on my MS research in Anaheim at the Geological Society of America annual conference. I also participated in the ‘Quantitative Analyses and Visualization’ short course, where I learned more about effective ways to plot and display new U-Pb detrital zircon data from my study. It was great having conversations with fellow geologists and friends, and I want to thank everyone who stopped by my poster and provided valuable feedback and questions!

PhD Student, Earth System Science, Department of Geosciences, Auburn University l Hydrogeologist l GIS Analyst I Member: Geological Society of America & American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
It was an interactive and successful week attending the Geological Society of America (GSA) annual conference in Anaheim, California, from September 21st to 26th this year. I had the opportunity to participate in professional networking activities between academia, industry, and our very own geosocial communities. It was nice to meet Dr. Nazrul Khandaker , Mir Fazlul Karim, P. G. & M Qumrul Hassan sir . My research advisor, Dr. Ashraf Uddin, and I presented our ongoing research with the brightest scholars among the broader GSA community. We are immensely grateful to Bangladesh Water Development Board specifically Dr. Anwar Zahid sir, Md. Maruful Haque & Nazmus Sakib. I also served as Auburn University Department of Geosciences representative and shared our academic excellence, excellent working environment, inclusive student experience, and engagements with prospective geoscience students and faculty members. We sincerely appreciate all AU geosciences students & faculty members especially Dr. Raphael Gottardi , Dr. Ann Ojeda, and Dr. Timothy Hawthorne for their warm wishes and unconditional support. The journey started with a daylong pre-conference GSA On To the Future Program workshop and ended up with an exciting post-conference field trip titled "How Geology and Paleontology Helped Build the Magic of the Disneyland Resort," led by Garrett Vice, Stuart Sumida, and Michelle Mary. A million thanks to all of the GSA crew for providing us with such excellent opportunities to participate in a respectful and inclusive scientific events every year. I look forward to joining next year GSA in San Antonio, Texas!

I'm excited to share that our paper "Ocean oxygenation and ecological restructuring caused by the late Paleozoic evolution of land plants" has been published in Geology. We used rare earth element data to show that the modern oxygenated oceans were established by the Late Devonian and Mississippian evolution of large land plants and the first forests. Despite this, shallow marine settings remained susceptible to redox instability that was likely caused by upwelling of anoxic deep waters. This potentially provides evidence of a mechanism for coeval mass extinction and metazoan reef collapse events. These events, and the Mississippian development of resiliently oxygenated oceans, potentially facilitated the radiation of the modern evolutionary fauna during this time. I am grateful to the International Association of Sedimentologists for the Postdoctoral Research Grant that partially funded this study, and to the Geological Society of America editorial team for their assistance.

I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the 2024 Geological Society of America GSA Connects conference in Anaheim, CA! It was an inspiring experience to connect with leading professional geologists, especially those from the University of Arizona, who shared insightful presentations on porphyry copper exploration and field geology of AZ. The knowledge gained from these sessions will directly enhance my work as an Exploration Geologist at Freeport-McMoRan. It was also great to attend this event alongside my colleagues, Ismaila Ibrahim and Nick Vaka from our exploration team at Freeport-McMoRan. Looking forward to applying these new learnings to future projects! #GSA2024 #Geology #CopperExploration #FreeportMcMoRan #ProfessionalDevelopment #PorphyryCopper #FieldGeology

Ana Venters recently presented her research at the international Geological Society of America meeting in Anaheim, CA. She has been using the vario PYRO cube EA coupled with the isoprime visION IRMS to analyze bulk organic δ13C to reconstruct the vegetation of West Turkana, Kenya during the early Miocene (~17.5 Ma). Currently, it's known to be exclusively C3 plants in a forest biome, and the bulk organic data she collected supports previous analyses. Here is a picture of the set up Ana has been using in Bill Lukens lab at James Madison University. Keep up the great work, Ana!
