The Fifth (!) annual 11TEN Innovation Partners Summit was yesterday, and once again, the event did not disappoint. Thoughtful discussions on AI, patient engagement, digital health and other topics. The summit also featured an engaging work session to brainstorm ways to expand access to direct-to-consumer healthcare, a topic of great relevance.

Treating traumatic brain injury could be transformed by hard-working stem cells that mend tissue, improve blood flow and support the immune system. At #UGA, a research team has won a $3.7M grant from #NIH to investigate the potential of these cells, called mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). The team includes GRA Eminent Scholar Steven Stice Stice (UGA) and longtime collaborator Franklin West, working with Jarrod Call. A key part of the project: creating quick tests to evaluate tiny regenerative particles called extracellular vesicles. Such tests could accelerate the development of new therapies. We may know a lot more in a few years about the link between dementia and insulin resistance found in diabetes. That’s because Emory University’s Global Diabetes Research Center (EGDRC) has received a $22M NIH grant to build on an existing research effort (which involves a cohort of 20,000+ South Asian study participants). GRA Senior Fellow Allan Levey, who leads Emory’s Goizueta Alzheiemer’s Disease Research Center, is partnering with lead investigator K.M. Venkat Narayan, who leads the EGDRC. Their work may help inform new treatments for either diabetes or Alzheimer’s (or both). More: https://bit.ly/4eTrilF

Our hearts go out to the entire Augusta University community (and others in the region) as they begin rebuilding after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. This post captures their situation well; and if you’ve reached out once already, reach out again.
Associate Provost, Professor of English & World Languages, Editor of Atlanta Review, Certified Executive Coach
While it isn’t getting much news coverage, Augusta is absolutely devastated. The last few days have been a crash course in leadership, flexibility, patience, and resilience. The leadership team at Augusta University has worked around the clock to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and faculty. President Russell Keen, Ed.D hasn’t even completed his first 100 days in office, but I’ve watched as he has risen to this unprecedented challenge—executing plans that have required difficult decisions. And, he has made those decisions while remaining steadfastly committed to compassionate care for our community. I was one of the only people who could get to campus on Friday. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much gas, so once I was there, I was there to stay. In many ways, I was happy for the distraction. Having a purpose keeps you focused on what really matters. The folks on the ground, including our partners and vendors, have been amazing. As I said, I’ve learned a great deal—from our senior leaders, from our Emergency Management Team, from our facilities personnel, from our finance and IT teams, and from our extraordinary students and faculty. The Augusta University community is strong, but we face many challenges as we work to rebuild. If you know people here, keep checking in. At first, it is hard to know what you need, but as folks begin to frame their plans, they may respond differently to your initial offer to help. Keep asking.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings a statistical update from the American Cancer Society on the disease. One finding: “Black women have 5% lower breast cancer incidence than White women, but 38% higher mortality.” https://bit.ly/3TQYB0l In Georgia, we have one of the leading experts in what’s driving disparities in breast cancer. Melissa Boneta Davis, GRA Distinguished Investigator at Morehouse School of Medicine, has made several important discoveries, including a genetic link between Triple-Negative Breast Cancer and women of African ancestry. Davis is now leading a $25M global study to generate valuable new data behind disparities. https://bit.ly/4dF85UH

One of the creative approaches Wells Fargo is taking to grow businesses in Georgia is to champion and support startups out of universities. That’s what their gift to GRA’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship program is helping to achieve – the program moves more inventions out of labs and into the world. Heartfelt thanks to our Wells Fargo friends for their support!
