Our regional team collaborated with a construction partner on an upper slope stabilization project along a rail track. The project involved installing 3,180 LF of hollow bar soil nails with grout injection and applying 10,450 SF of geotextile, drilling 855 LF of sub-horizontal drains, and installing 10,450 SF of slope mesh. Additionally, we completed 3,470 LF of soil nails and conducted thorough verification testing. This successful partnership ensured the stability and safety of the double-track upper slope. #SlopeStabilization #GeotechnicalEngineering #RailSafety

A newly constructed section in North Carolina faced significant instability, causing slope displacement and a scarp head formation. The over-steepened south-facing cut slope exposed residual soils and weathered rock, resulting in shallow slides. Our Solution: We installed soil nails up to 20 feet long to provide essential reinforcement. Reinforced shotcrete was applied to the main scarp area, securing it to the protruding soil nail heads. Additionally, we placed high-strength steel-pinned mesh and added more soil nail anchors for further stabilization. This multi-faceted approach effectively mitigated the risk of further displacement, ensuring the long-term safety and stability of the roadway. #GeotechnicalEngineering #SlopeStabilization #SoilNail #Shotcrete #EngineeringSolutions

Intern Spotlight: Julia Kempff Meet Julia Kempff, a construction engineering intern from Missouri University of Science and Technology. With a strong foundation in civil and architectural engineering, Julia is currently working on a project comparing hollow bar vs solid bar soil nails. Recently, Julia had the opportunity to visit four job sites where she collected data, drilled soil nails, and shot shotcrete. Her favorite part of the internship has been the hands-on learning experience, which has significantly expanded her geotechnical engineering knowledge. Julia has been an invaluable asset to our team this summer, and we look forward to her ongoing contributions to GSI! #GSIIntern #Summerintern #InternSpotlight #EngineeringInternship #TeamGSI

When slide and #rockfall mitigation measures along a roadway deteriorated, posing an immediate danger to the public due to failing draped mesh and sloughing riprap slopes causing rockfall onto the roadway. The State DOT urgently requested GSI to design and construct a stabilization system. This solution included a 70-foot wide by 90-foot long pinned mesh system and a 210-foot long draped mesh stabilization system. We used Hollow-bar anchors for the pinned #mesh section to navigate the up to 15-foot thick surficial riprap economically and feasibly. The team implemented measures to maintain the service design life of the anchors, considering the moderately corrosive site conditions. This emergency effort ensured the safety of the traveling public and restored stability to this critical stretch of roadway.

Project Highlight: Emergency Mitigation We were contracted by a state DOT for emergency #landslide and rockfall mitigation on a highway. *Phase 1: Rockfall mitigation on a 180-foot-long slope extending 165 feet above the roadway. This included hand and mechanical scaling and tree removal via rope access. *Phase 2: Safety scaling, installation of rock bolts and anchors, pinned mesh, and drape on a 150-foot-long slope extending 165 feet vertically. We drilled exploration holes to determine rock bolt and anchor spacing, installed pinned mesh using rock bolts on the upper vertical feet of the slope, and utilized rope and helicopter access for limited areas. Additionally, we addressed a mobilized rock mass, including a 20-foot sandstone block with safety scaling, cable and post anchors, and hybrid barrier and drape installation. #Engineering #RockfallMitigation #InfrastructureSafety #GeoStabilization #EmergencyResponse #SlopeStabilization
