The Geosyntec Microplastics Focus Group is excited to announce the launch of our new external website! About three years ago, during my second week at Geosyntec, I met Tina Liu, PE. Tina reached out to me about microplastics, and we instantly bonded over our mutual interest (or rather, obsession) with the topic. We spent hours discussing the state of the science, regulations, and the potential impact of this emerging contaminant for our clients. This marked the beginning of a new practice area at Geosyntec Consultants. Over the past few years, we have dedicated ourselves to learning everything we can about microplastics, building an internal team, and expanding our practice. The launch of this new external landing page is a significant milestone, and I am incredibly proud of what our group has achieved. A big thank you to Javier Suarez Jason Conder Krista Thrasher Alex Ambrosino Rumm Michaela McKenzie, P.E. Brandon Steets and our new microplastics colleagues at Gradient, Andrew Yeh, Ph.D., DABT Matt Tymchak. We appreciate all of the support received from many folks at Geosyntec. I am excited to see how our practice continues to grow! https://lnkd.in/e9fQSRtU

Wildfires in the western US are increasing in size and intensity due to 150 years of forest management practices that prevented fires and built up "fuel" on the forest floor, an issue well-known to western land managers. Federal and state initiatives across the west are looking for solutions. It is important to remember that our first peoples were managing what we consider "wildlands" as their gardens for thousands of years. This is a great opportunity for California to begin a new chapter in wildfire management.
Cultural burning, a practice central to Indigenous cultures and land stewardship, was criminalized by California in 1850, a history contributing to today’s wildfire crisis. A new bill in California, sponsored by the Karuk Tribe and awaiting the Governor’s signature, supports breaking down barriers to cultural burning to restore landscape resilience and honor tribal sovereignty.
