How I DAREd to help Mom with her dementia-related aggression My mom was a tough case in her dementia - she could be really moody, sometimes incredibly aggressive - heartbreaking. I learned to meet her where she was, on that day, no matter what her mood. I used what I call "the compassion approach" with her.    The easiest way is to remember this is with the acronym  DARE: Don't Argue, React, or Explain.   Why is this important?  Dementia is a neurological disorder that affects cognitive abilities. Just as we wouldn't treat someone with cancer like a child, we must respect and validate those with dementia.  They may not communicate as they once did, but that doesn't mean we can explain them out of their condition.   Instead, focus on validation. Show them they are heard and understood. This simple shift can make a world of difference in their experience and your relationship.
