Exploited children need support that meets their specific needs! On October 16, IN VIA opened Germany's first specialist counselling center for the #trafficking and exploitation of minors in Berlin. On this occasion, Naile Tanış, Head of the Independent Reporting Mechanism on Trafficking in Human Beings, emphasized that there is still a great need for action to protect and support children and young people. Among others, the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children Mama Fatima Singhateh, the President of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on THB (GRETA) Helga Gayer and the State Secretary for Youth and Family in the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family Falko Liecke took part in the opening ceremony.

➡️ We are looking forward to the international conference "FIGHTING LABOUR EXPLOITATION — For decent work in Europe" on November 8, 2024 in Berlin! #LabourExploitation is also a reality in Germany and Berlin – in our midst. Exploitative working conditions systematically undermine fundamental social achievements such as minimum wages, sick pay, protection against dismissal, social security contributions and occupational health and safety. A lack of knowledge of language and law as well as social isolation can prevent those affected from leaving these inhumane work situations. People are often willing to accept working conditions that fall short of EU standards but are still better than the poverty and unemployment from which they come – or they are deliberately recruited with false promises. In short, labour exploitation involves serious criminal offences and violates the labour and human rights of those affected. In order to explore how labour exploitation can be better combated and decent work secured, the state of Berlin, represented by the Senate Department for Labour, Social Services, Gender Equality, Integration, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination (SenASGIVA), is hosting an international conference. The exchange between politics, science and practice focuses on positive examples of concepts and measures for protection against labour exploitation. The aim of the conference is to share challenges and solutions across borders. The first Periodic Monitoring Report on Human Trafficking in #Germany was released today. The report by the Deutsches Institut für Menschenrechte (German Institute for Human Rights) consolidates and analyzes all available data from federal, state authorities, and civil society organizations on #humantrafficking. It provides public access to comparative data on victims of all forms of exploitation across all federal states, going beyond Bundeskriminalamt BKA figures. Continuous improvement in data collection is essential to understand human rights violations and gaps in the support system, ensuring evidence-based policy decisions and access to rights for victims. From 2020 to 2022, investigative authorities identified 3,155 victims of human trafficking. 📰 Currently, the #humanrights of older persons are inadequately protected and scattered across different legal instruments. We urgently need a dedicated, binding instrument in this area. That’s why on this year’s #InternationalDayofOlderPersons, we reiterate our call for a dedicated UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. ⚖ This would offer the legal protection that has been lacking for so long. 📢 In recent years, European #NHRIs have advocated intensively for this through our Working Group on the Rights of Older Persons. Their engagement, including in the UN’s Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing, has contributed to the positive momentum in this area.
