Our current education system, designed over 200 years ago, no longer meets the needs of today's students or prepares them for the complexities of the modern world. Katie Martin and Devin Vodicka from Learner-Centered Collaborative explore how we can transition from a school-centered model to a learner-centered paradigm in a new Getting Smart Blog. This shift isn’t about tweaking the old system; it’s about reimagining schools as flexible, community-driven hubs where students’ strengths, passions, and goals are prioritized. Across the country, forward-thinking districts are leading this shift by fostering creativity, problem-solving, and deep engagement. From project-based learning to mentorship and real-world applications, these environments are empowering students to take ownership of their learning. The focus is no longer just on academic achievement but on nurturing the whole learner—ensuring they are prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead. It was SO nice to see real-world learning in the, well, real world. We got the chance to learn from students about learning experiences that matter, tour countless schools that are pushing experiential learning forward, see faces old and new, and hear some of the following amazing takeaways from the learners at the center of it all: 💡"[entrepreneurship class] gave me permission to fail, and permission to bounce back.” 💡 “We learn a lot about leadership in yearbook. A leader inspires and a boss tells people what to do.” 💡 “[My school] allows us to have opportunities and because of that, I’m always hungry for them.” 💡 “I kinda think about this program all the time… when you’re obsessed with what you do like I am, I think ‘I have to get back there! I have cinnamon rolls to put in the oven.’” THIS is what engaged learning sounds like. Thank you to everyone who made this convening possible. #NewPathways #RealWorldLearning #RealWorldLearningKC Josh Reppun Judith L.
