    Our own Papa Gibson & The Writs of Replevin were the winners of this year’s Battle of the Bands: Banding Together to End Domestic Violence, an annual fundraiser benefiting San Francisco’s Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP). The band rocked the house with music from Carly Simon, Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Hootie & The Blowfish, Minnie Ripperton, and Earth, Wind & Fire, raised $21,600 of the almost $100,000 total raised by the event, and got to take home the Best Lawyer Band in the Bay trophy. Our congratulations and thanks to band members: Christian Faulkner (vocals/guitar) – Support Center Analyst Jayde Garduno-Perret (vocals) – Attorney Training Coordinator James Graham (drums) – friend of the band Alvin Hernandez (bass) – friend of the band Lidia Meza (sax/vocals) – Team Support West Secretary Dylan Noceda (vocals/guitar) – Litigation Associate Roderic Wilson (keyboards) – Manager, Secretarial Services This year’s Battle of the Bands — the FVAP’s 12th annual rock star fundraiser — took place September 26 at the Chapel in San Francisco. Participating bands consist of lawyers and employees from Bay Area law firms and corporate legal teams.     In an article for Law360, Washington, D.C. partner Matthew McGill and associate David Casazza discuss the issues raised in the bankruptcy filing of the car-rental company Hertz Corp., which sought Chapter 11 protection in 2020 when it found itself in an untenable financial situation because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the pandemic eased and the economy shifted, however, Hertz found that its assets significantly exceeded its debts.

    Gibson Dunn partner and Pro Bono Chair Katie Marquart has been honored by Human Rights First with its 2024 Marvin E. Frankel Award for Pro Bono Service in recognition of her leadership in advocating for Afghan refugees in the U.S. The award was presented during a ceremony in New York on October 8. Human Rights First noted that Katie “led a team of more than 150 Gibson Dunn attorneys across all of the firm’s U.S. offices in providing critical pro bono services to Afghan refugees.” The Gibson Dunn team “answered the call to save lives,” dedicating some 5,000 hours on behalf of dozens of individuals and families. “Their tireless work to protect Afghan refugees fleeing harm at the hands of the Taliban has been inspirational.” For full details, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gKgPWPip
