About us

History/Organization: GYAC is a 501(c)(3), who opened its doors in 1998. Its sole purpose is to enhance the academic achievement of children in Indian River County. A volunteer Board of Directors governs GYAC. The Board embodies the concept that there is nothing more important than ensuring that our children are provided the opportunities and support necessary to ensure their graduation from high school which will enable them to attend the college or vocational program of their choosing. Areas of Expertise: Staff includes degreed teachers and tutors, retired psychologists, professional mentors and volunteers, and recreational support staff. Collaborative partners provide specific programmatic expertise in such areas as cultural arts, gardening and music instruction. Targeted Population: At-risk students who live in the Gifford, Sebastian, Vero Beach and Wabasso areas of Indian River County. In addition to youth, GYAC provides programs and activities for adults and seniors citizens. The average daily attendance at GYAC for programs and activities is over 200 students and adults. Facility: GYAC was a 24,000 square foot facility equipped with classrooms, computer labs, a library operated by the County, and an in-door gym but has recently completed a 14,000 SF expansion. The new educational center includes eight multi-use classrooms including a computer lab, two administrative offices and an outdoor patio. Not only is GYAC used for events, exercise classes, bible studies, and computer and educational training for seniors, it is also a home for those in need of services and information. The Center hosts Job Fairs, Health Clinics, training classes, and community gatherings. It has become a vital part of the Gifford community as well as an asset to Indian River County.

  • Today is a special day for the GYAC family. We are celebrating 27 years of service from our esteemed colleague, Freddie Woolfork. He has been a steady rock guiding and supporting our mission since its founding in 1998. Freddie has been the shepherd to the GYAC family since day one and continues to wholeheartedly represent our mission in the community. If we could all take a moment to say "Thank You, Mr. Woolfork!" in the comments, we can thank him for his hard work as a community.

  • GYAC students are feverishly rehearsing material for this year's Junior Theatre Festival in partnership with Riverside Theatre. With a single JTF experience under their belt, GYAC students are thrilled to dive into this year's production of Once on this Island JR! Rehearsals began in August and the group's first performance will take place on Saturday, December 7th as part of Riverside Theatre's Winterfest. We can't wait to see our newcomers and returning students back on stage in a few short months!

  • 🎉Hats off to @irsctheriver for an outstanding event last Friday at @crossoverMission. 🏀The River Hoops Rally was a great opportunity for local youth to get up close and personal with IRSC's men's basketball team, and we were happy to be part of the collaboration. 🏆The River Hoops Rally was a win for the community! 📷: James Crocco

  • In the wee morning hours of August 29th, seven GYAC students boarded a bus bound for Atlanta, GA to attend the PGA Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club with other Building Opportunities Through Golf (BOTG) students. BOTG combines learning and leisure by visiting a variety of stops along the way including: ⛳Mizuno USA 🏛️National Center for Civil and Human Rights 🎢Six Flags 🥤 World of Coca-Cola Funds are raised to cover the cost of the trip through BOTG's annual Game Changers Tournament. FUN FACT: The East Lake community was a poverty-ridden area suffering from crime and other systemic issues. The PGA took interest in the golf course and invested money to rehab it, which sparked interest from private investors to rehabilitate the community surrounding the golf course. The area is now thriving, has low crime, and East Lake Golf Course is now the permanent home of the annual PGA Tour Championship. BOTG's long term goal is to mimic the East Lake rehabilitation project to restore hope and vitality to communities by using golf as a catalyst, and Fort Pierce, Florida as our proving grounds. For our Fort Pierce kids the see the East Lake community gives them a sense of the impact that golf can have both on and off the course. By sponsoring, donating, or playing in our tournament, you are helping us to be game changers in these small and forgotten communities!
