Today on Foundry Theory! Locks, Keys and the Limits of AI in Biology https://lnkd.in/dD_CNEJb In which I try to throw some cold water on AI but my heart isn't really in it. I'm not usually one to play the grumpy contrarian. Biotech has a culture of (how can I put this diplomatically?) robust skepticism. I find there is little added value to being the 73rd person who says "this probably won't work" about a new idea. But I have also always been fascinated by fundamental limits on technology. Things like P!=NP, the speed of light, the laws of thermodynamics. When we identify hard bounds on what is not possible, it can enable better ways to approach what is possible. AI looks so powerful to me right now, that I can't help but wonder if it will crash into the limits of what can be learned from data. If it does - I bet it will happen in biology first.
