Last Thursday, we were thrilled to host Full Moon, Full Potential—our first in-person event since 2019—on the stunning rooftop of the Kimpton Canary Hotel. It was an unforgettable evening dedicated to celebrating the strong, smart, and bold girls of Santa Barbara County, alongside our incredible network of supporters. We were joined by Girls Inc. families, friends, elected officials, education and nonprofit leaders, and a dedicated community of supporters—some new and many who have championed our girls for decades. The sense of community and shared purpose was truly inspiring. We’re excited to share our new video, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara: A New Generation of Leaders, which debuted at the event. It highlights the incredible girls and families we serve, along with our ongoing commitment to empowering the next generation. You can watch it here, just scroll down a bit to find it. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us and to our amazing sponsors. https://lnkd.in/gnegHk4j

Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the contributions and rich cultural legacy of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States. In Santa Barbara, this celebration takes on special significance, as the city’s history has been deeply shaped by powerful Hispanic women who have left lasting marks on the region. From the early days of the city’s founding, María Ygnacia López de Carrillo, one of the first female landowners in California, was instrumental in shaping the area’s agricultural landscape. Her leadership and resilience were vital during the early development of the region. In more recent history, Dolores Huerta, a civil rights activist with deep ties to California, championed labor rights and women's empowerment. Though known for her work statewide, her influence extended to Santa Barbara, where she inspired local communities to advocate for equality and justice. Mireya "Ladydi" Hernández, a contemporary leader, has been a key advocate for youth education and access to resources in underserved communities in Santa Barbara. Through her activism, she continues to uplift the Hispanic community, especially young girls, encouraging them to become strong leaders. These women, and countless others, exemplify the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month: celebrating the enduring strength, cultural pride, and impactful contributions of Hispanic women throughout Santa Barbara’s history.

Congratulations to our board member, Nicole Noren, on her latest documentary with ESPN, Listen, which was just named a winner at the National Awards for Education Reporting! We're proud to have you on board with us.
We are so proud of our Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara board member, Nicole Noren, for her outstanding work as Director on yet another award-winning documentary on campus gender violence. Her latest documentary with ESPN, Listen, was just named a winner at the National Awards for Education Reporting. Listen is an investigative documentary about Lauren McCluskey, University of Utah student-athlete, who repeatedly sought help as her ex-boyfriend stalked and harassed her. The people and the institutions responsible for listening to her and protecting her failed at every turn. Tragically, she was murdered. Investigative reporting and documentary filmmaking serve as potent forms of advocacy by uncovering hidden truths, amplifying marginalized voices, and catalyzing social change. Through in-depth research, compelling storytelling, and powerful visuals, they shed light on injustices, challenge power structures, and inspire action, driving towards a more informed and equitable society. Advocacy is a guiding tenant at Girls Inc., and we couldn’t be prouder of Nicole’s important work. Read more about Listen from Nicole’s perspective: https://lnkd.in/gbv6P85f
