    👀 Can CT scanning reveal electrolyte? 🧪 Sometimes! Check out these fresh BYD 4680 cells that we scanned in 2 minutes. We can clearly see the electrolyte meniscus in the core. The amount of excess electrolyte in these cells is wildly different.     📦 Prismatic cells are becoming increasingly popular. Let's take a look at their quality: 🩻 We bought and scanned 5 fresh prismatic lithium-ion batteries using Glimpse's high-throughput computed tomography (CT) technology. This technology is identical to a CAT scan used in medical imaging. ❗️ These cells have a unique structure: Six distinct jellyrolls are present in each cell. If we take a closer look, we can observe local buckling and "waviness" in the electrodes. These heterogeneities can cause lithium plating and internal shorting, especially under aggressive use cases. 🤔 How concerned should we be about these build quality issues? The short answer is: It depends! If these cells are used infrequently in a low-lifetime application (say, in a golf cart), these defects might not cause any major problems (although why take the chance?). If these cells are used for a 25-year grid storage system, however, there's a good chance these issues might cause field failure or, worse, a safety event. 🔮 The Glimpse Portal allows battery engineers to rapidly diagnose the quality of their batteries.     🔋 Battery engineers routinely use electrochemical testing — for good reason! “Echem” testing yields critical insights into battery performance and lifetime, BUT… 🏭❌ … defect detection is one use case where electrochemical testing falls short. Many “latent” defects have no electrochemical signature 🫥 until they cause a major problem down the road. Unfortunately, most battery manufacturers have been relying primarily on electrochemical testing for defect detection 😬 which ended up in billion-dollar recalls 💰 💡 This is precisely why we started Glimpse! Just like how doctors turn to medical imaging 🩻 to diagnose early-stage tumors, battery scientists & engineers must turn to imaging to diagnose defects, failure, and safety risks.     ⚠️ Major battery defects found in off-the-shelf batteries ⚠️ One of our summer interns, Jinhong, bought a variety of 18650 cells 🔋 from Amazon and then CT scanned them using Glimpse's high-quality, 2-minute scanning recipe. We found all sorts of severe defects in these cells, including jellyroll buckling, anode-cathode overhang violations, and housing damage. These defects could induce thermal runaway 🔥🚒 as well as electrolyte and gas leaks 💧. Battery quality issues have been responsible for major safety events in e-bikes 🚴, consumer electronics📱, electric vehicles 🚗, and more. 🩻 Just like how medical imaging is the best technique to detect early-stage tumors, X-ray CT scanning is the best technique to detect early-stage battery defects. 📞 Contact Glimpse to learn more about our high-throughput, high-quality CT scanning offerings.
