About us
GAPPS seeks to improve birth outcomes worldwide by reducing the burden of premature birth and stillbirths. We are working to close the knowledge gap in understanding the causes of preterm birth and stillbirth and collaborating to implement evidence based interventions to improve birth outcomes. Preterm birth and stillbirth are complex local and global health problems that require an interdisciplinary research approach and an international commitment. Collaboration drives our work. We bring people from different fields together to generate innovative approaches to understanding pregnancy, preterm birth and stillbirth. We advocate for evidence driven treatment, but know that ultimately, prevention is key. Only by preventing preterm birth and stillbirth can we make significant progress toward having every birth be a healthy birth. This requires research, investment and global collaboration. GAPPS is leading a collaborative, global effort to increase awareness and accelerate innovative research and interventions to improve maternal, newborn and child health outcomes around the world.

Skin-to-skin contact right after birth💜 This World Prematurity Day 2023, we want to advocate for immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (iKMC) to enable all newborns the best start into life. 🦘 Recent WHO recommendations suggest initiating KMC immediately after birth, even before the baby is considered clinically stable. If no other specific treatment needs to be prioritised, iKMC can prevent unnecessary separation of mother and child. Other family members such as the mother's partner, can also be involved for example in providing skin-to-skin contact, if the mother is not able to right after birth. The immediate KMC Study showed that infants who received iKMC had ✔ lower mortality rates ✔ lower rates of hypothermia at discharge ✔ decreased incidences of sepsis compared to newborns introduced to KMC 24 hours post-birth. ➡️Join us on #WPD2023 in raising awareness for #iKMC and immediate #SkinToSkin contact ensuring these impactful practices reach every baby everywhere!
