At COP16, Devi Anggraini from #AMAN brings attention to a central message of the Inside Out Project: diversity in culture translates to biodiversity in nature. This collaborative project, supported by Movilizatorio and Guardians of Tomorrow, underscores that conservation cannot succeed if it excludes the voices of communities who’ve safeguarded nature for centuries. The installation is a powerful reminder that protecting biodiversity also means protecting livelihoods, cultures, and the knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. #COP16 #InsideOut #IndigenousVoices #PazConLaNaturaleza

At today’s High-Level Ministerial event, Indigenous leaders and government representatives convened to drive forward direct financing initiatives for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs). This dialogue, spearheaded by the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership (Forest & Climate Leaders' Partnership), aligns with discussions on a significant financial pledge for IP&LCs, planned for 2025. The event brought to light the vital link between land tenure rights and sustainable financing, underscoring for government leaders that progress on both fronts is essential for meeting biodiversity and climate goals. Cristiane Pankararu (Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (APIB) and #Anmiga) emphasized the importance of grounding financial pledges in Indigenous self-determination, free from shifting political influences. She highlighted the monumental work led by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to create new funding mechanisms and platforms, such as Brazil’s Jaguatá Fund and the Shandia Platform, which are paving the way for accessible, direct financing. The Shandia Platform is particularly crucial, uniting multiple funds and organizations worldwide to ensure the new pledge aligns with the priorities of those directly impacted. Joseph Itongwa from #REPALEAC echoed these sentiments, stressing that a new financial commitment must address the challenge of participation and increased transparency. “Transparency must flow all the way to the communities,” he stated, “because only with clear, accessible information can we ensure that funds reach the ground level and meet local needs.” He also reminded governments and partners that a new pledge must be formed with IP&LCs, providing them with decision making spaces and influence. The FCLP’s newly established Platform to Support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Climate Action, with essential contributions from the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC), was another key point of discussion. The platform aims to elevate global recognition of forest tenure rights, advocate for a new post-2025 financial pledge, and push for dedicated goals to protect IP&LC territories in climate and biodiversity frameworks. Minister Sonia Guajajara from Brazil also shared progress on recent land demarcations, demonstrating commitment to Indigenous land right, whilst recognizing the need to work further to demarcate more and more territories. Leaders from The Christensen Fund, Bezos Earth Fund, and Rights and Resources Initiative as well as representatives from Norway and Peru, further lent their support to advancing these critical initiatives. #DirectFinancing #IndigenousRights #Shandia #COP16

At COP16, we witnessed a groundbreaking moment: four powerful women—Aissatou Oumarou, Devi Anggraini, Sara Omi and Cristiane Pankararu—from four distinct regions of the Global South, coming together to amplify Indigenous women leadership and advocate for solutions rooted in traditional knowledge. United by a shared purpose, they champion the essential role of women in conservation and climate action, underscoring the urgency of people-centered approaches in biodiversity protection. United, they’re a testament to the impact of many voices coming together to drive meaningful change. 🚨 Urgent Call from Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples 🚨 The survival of Indigenous Peoples, our planet, and humanity itself is at stake. The Brazilian Congress is advancing alarming proposals—PEC 48, PEC 36, and PL 4039—that aim to block Indigenous land demarcation and open protected territories to exploitation. Today, Indigenous Peoples from across Brazil have gathered in Brasília, echoing their maracás in a powerful stand against PEC 48. This proposed amendment threatens to cement the harmful “Marco Temporal” policy, undermining their ancestral rights. Indigenous leaders delivered a letter to the three branches of government, urgently demanding respect for their constitutional protections. “We, Indigenous peoples from all regions and biomes, have once again come to Brasília to denounce the continuous, systematic attacks on our rights and territories.” 🌱 Indigenous lands are vital for biodiversity, climate stability, and life itself. Yet these proposals threaten to strip away those protections, endangering not only Indigenous rights but the future of everyone. Stand with us. Join the call for #DemarcationNow—because together, we protect life and secure our shared future. 🛑 Say NO to PEC 48, PEC 36, and PL 4039. Support the struggle by donating at https://buff.ly/3Aibavi. At COP16, leaders like Levi Sucre, Dinamam Tuxa, Kleber Karipuna and Juan Carlos Jintiach highlighted a pressing issue: the need for direct financing for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPs & LCs). These communities are biodiversity’s frontline defenders, yet barriers to multilateral funds persist. As Dinamam Tuxa emphasized, “We are the guardians of biodiversity; it's only fair that funding reaches those fulfilling this role.” Throughout the week, discussions centered on practical solutions to ensure IPs and LCs have access to the resources needed to continue their conservation work. By breaking down finance access barriers, we’re moving closer to a future where biodiversity protection is community-led, resilient, and equitable. 🌱 Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (APIB) #DirectFinancing #COP16 #BiodiversityConservation #EnvironmentalJustice #SustainableFunding 📸 Kamikia Kisedje

The Nature and Culture Summit 2024 at COP16 is a pivotal moment for championing biocultural diversity. 🌱🌏 Joseph Itongwa, Regional Coordinator of #REPALEAC and Co-Chair of the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, addressed the event with a message rooted in Indigenous wisdom. He highlighted the deep connection between Indigenous cultural practices and biodiversity conservation, emphasizing that solutions for environmental challenges must integrate traditional knowledge. With clear evidence linking ancestral practices to biodiversity preservation, it’s essential that global financing prioritize solutions led by Indigenous Peoples. #NatureAndCultureSummit #IndigenousVoices #DirectFinancing #ClimateAction #COP16

🌍 Juan Carlos Jintiach of the Shuar people, representing Indigenous communities from 24 countries, was joined by leaders from the Congo Basin Kozo Simplice and Diel Mochire as he opens #COP16 Forest & Water Day with a powerful message. 1. All life is connected—water, forests, people, flora, and fauna. When we protect one, we protect them all. 2. When water is polluted, it disrupts everything—the trees, animals, and people who depend on them. This is why we must protect water and forests together. 3. We cannot talk about forests without addressing water, and we cannot tackle biodiversity or climate change without honoring Indigenous rights. Let’s bring Indigenous voices into decision-making, collaborate meaningfully, and respect their rights to create a sustainable future. #IndigenousWisdom #ForestProtection #WaterRights #ClimateAction 📸 Kamikia Kisedje, If Not Us Then Who?, UNDP
