The "Disclaimer Method" can be an effective tool in Cross Cultural Communication. I only wish I would have known it before blowing it with Jaime, my employee. Spoiler alert: It did not end well. As global workplaces become the norm, the ability to build trust across cultures is more relevant than ever. I recently facilitated a training session for a mixed US-Mexico team, and it brought to light fascinating differences in trust-building. While there were variations across the board, the Mexican team members tended to lean towards affective trust, prioritizing personal rapport and emotional bonds, while many of the American team members focused on competence-based trust, where the demonstration of skills and results is more important. It was like a light bulb got switched on. The previous dynamics suddenly made sense. Understanding the interplay between affective and competency-based trust enabled the team to recalibrate their approach, finding a nice balance between building personal connections and delivering results. Instead of viewing cultural differences as barriers, they embraced them as opportunities for team development. It all starts with understanding. You don't know what you don't know, so learning, recognizing and respecting these cultural differences can turn potential challenges into powerful opportunities for connection and collaboration. #interculturaltraining #crossculturalcommunication #effectivecommunication #teamwork #interpersonalintelligence picture by freepik
