  • We are proud to have recently hosted the 2024 EnvironMentors National Science Fair and Awards Ceremony at the USDA-Jamie L. Whitten Building Patio! The EnvironMentors Fair brought together over 75 participants and supporters, including high school researchers, mentors, parents, poster evaluators, speakers and other guests. Our speakers, including representatives from US federal agencies, such as USDA, DOE, EPA and NASA, along with environmental NGOs and past EnvironMentors participants. Over the 4 days in DC, students presented their research, and enjoyed a Career Pathways Luncheon, personal US Capitol Building Tour, and a visit to our National Mall—many experiencing their first trip out of state! 🌍 Day 1: Partnering to Combat Vector-Borne Diseases in St. Lucia 🌱 Exciting start to our collaboration with key local partners to co-develop a public education campaign aimed at reducing the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in St. Lucia with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). Today, we began laying the foundation for a campaign that will empower communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. Together, we’re strengthening health resilience in the Caribbean and driving meaningful change through science, communication, and community action. Stay tuned for updates on this impactful initiative! #PublicHealth #VectorBorneDiseases #ClimateAndHealth #CommunityResilience #Collaboration

It was an honor to engage with young BIPOC students at the EnvironMentors Career Pathways Luncheon hosted by the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) earlier this month. Engaging youth in environmental health education is crucial for fostering a sustainable and healthy future, especially in the dynamic world of STEM. Moreover, the involvement of young individuals in environmental health initiatives not only raises awareness but also empowers them to take an active role in addressing environmental challenges. Thank you, GCSE, for the invitation! I look forward to participating in future events! I am so incredible proud of Penn State Sustainability's EnvironMentors! This week, they were awarded 1st & 2nd Place overall & won the Community Impact Award at the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE)'s National Science Fair. Through mentorship & community-building, these high school students from racial, economic, or gender minority backgrounds conduct environmental STEM research & communicate their findings. It is truly remarkable what they accomplish. Enormous kudos to our coordinator, Lorraine Jones. She is an incredible mentor who proves that a welcoming community, close mentorship, and high expectations creates success. Brava, Lorraine!

It was a busy and invigorating day at #COP28!   1️⃣ Today, Dr. Stephen Hammer, our CEO, participated in an important panel at the Barbados Pavilion. During the panel, he discussed the Loss and Damage negotiations, which he led while serving as a top advisor at The World Bank. A significant outcome of COP27 was the approval of The Loss and Damage fund, which was announced on the first day of COP28 this year.   2️⃣ Dr. Hammer also joined a panel hosted by the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) on 'Boundary Spanning for Climate Solutions.' The conversation focused on the benefits of working across disciplinary and sector boundaries to advance climate solutions, aligning with The Exchange's vision of cross-sector collaboration. The panel included Dr. A. Karim Ahmed from the University of Connecticut and Dr. Esther Obonyo from Penn State University. It was moderated by Dr. Anna M. Stewart Ibarra of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). Thanks to Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE) for hosting an invigorating discussion!   3️⃣ Lastly, Dr. Hammer and Maurie McInnis, The Exchange Board Chair, visited OceanX's OceanXplorer, the most advanced exploration, research, and media vessel ever built. The ship has state-of-the-art research labs that are leading the way in a better understanding of our planet's underwater ecosystems and in solving #climatechange. Thanks to OceanX for the informative and eye-opening first look at the vessel! #NYClimateExchange #ClimateSolutions
