The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is proud to launch the Global Field Grants as part of the Fonseca Leadership Program, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). With a $1.5 million commitment over three years, this partnership aims to support young conservationists worldwide. The GEF, a multilateral family of funds addressing biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution, and supporting land and ocean health, initiated the Gustavo Fonseca Youth Leadership Program to honour the late Gustavo Fonseca, former GEF Director of Programs. Through this program, the Global Field Grants will provide $500,000 annually via the MBZ Fund’s online application system to support young conservationists in developing nations. The MBZ Fund focuses on enabling impactful field conservation projects globally. “Recognizing that people drive these efforts, our commitment goes beyond funding. We focus on supporting early-career conservationists. Over the past 15 years, we have supported 63% first-time recipients,” said Nicolas Heard, Acting Director General of the MBZ Fund. “This partnership aims to empower young people from developing countries, amplifying their voices and enhancing their participation in environmental research and policy. The GEF is dedicated to investing in the next generation, who will play pivotal roles in environmental governance and stewardship”, said Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CEO and Chairperson of the GEF. The African Development Bank has secured $18 million in funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for two major projects aimed at bolstering environmental sustainability and resilience across #Africa: 1. #ZambeziRiver Basin Management initiative received $10.57 million to improve the collaborative management of water, energy, food, and environmental resources within the basin, which spans eight southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 2: The Global Electronics Management (GEM) program has received $7.83 million to address the growing challenge of electronic waste in Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia. ⚡️ Last week, #GEFcouncil67 approved $736.42 million in funding for vast environmental needs. The approved work programs will seek to bring global environmental benefits through activities addressing #biodiversityloss, #chemicals and waste #pollution, land #degradation, #climatechange, and international #waters. Among other projects and programs, funding was approved for a Great Green Wall program established between the #LDCF and GEF Trust Funds, a Coral Bond blended finance project that builds on the lessons from the 2022 Rhino Bond project, and a Sustainable Cities Integrated Program. However, human activities such as illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development have already caused the loss of 23% of the total area in the past 20 years. IUCN and FAO, in collaboration with strategic partners in the region, are implementing the Global Environment Facility -funded Integrated Program for Critical Forest Biomes in Mesoamerica to halt and reverse the loss and degradation of these unique ecosystems.
