There is no country that currently invests more in nature than it spends on destroying it. Changing that calculus and promoting nature-positive incentives can go a long way to closing the #biodiversity financing gap and is a key part of achieving international environmental goals. The Global Environment Facility will hold a full-day conference on October 27, in the Green Zone of UN Biodiversity's COP16 Colombia, on the potential of positive incentives, reforms of harmful subsidies, and policy alignment to achieve Target 18 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF). The event is co-hosted with the Government of Colombia, UN Biodiversity's Secretariat, Conservation International, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, The ICCF Group, The Nature Conservancy, The World Bank, and World Economic Forum. 🔗 Join us in Cali and online: https://lnkd.in/eSsgyp7V #COP16Colombia | #GEFatCOP16Colombia

Tackling our planet’s most pressing environmental problems.
About us
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the largest multilateral trust fund focused on enabling developing countries to invest in nature, and supports the implementation of major international environmental conventions including on biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification. The GEF was established on eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, to help tackle our planet’s most pressing environmental problems. Since then, the GEF has provided over $114 billion in grants and mobilized in excess of $70 billion in additional financing for more than 4,000 projects. The GEF has become an international partnership of 184 countries, international institutions, civil society organizations, and private sector to address global environmental issues.

Our support for #biodiversity is not just about protected areas and endangered species. We are also helping countries to manage public health and environmental risks through the UN Biodiversity #CartagenaProtocol on Biosafety from living modified organisms. And by funding action related to the #NagoyaProtocol on Access and Benefit-sharing, we are enabling countries to ensure Indigenous Peoples and local communities can benefit from the use nature and traditional knowledge, for instance in pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. At COP16 Colombia, we held a side event where we were delighted to hear from experts working in these important areas, from Bhutan, Cambodia, Cameroon, the Philippines, in partnership with organizations including UNDP and UN Environment Programme. They shared their experiences working to make their countries and regions safer, healthier, and resilient through Global Environment Facility support, including through needed equipment and training. Country representatives also stressed the need for more investment in the resources, legal frameworks, equipment, personnel, and training needed to ensure work on the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols is part of the push to meet global biodiversity goals. Thank you Rigobert NTEP, Alex Owusu-Biney, Wadzanayi Goredema- Mandivenyi, Mani Prasad Nirola, Bopreang Ken, Santiago Carrizosa and all those working in support of these protocols for your collaboration and partnership. #COP16Colombia | #GEFatCOP16Colombia

The Amazon is the most biodiverse and largest tropical forest ecosystem in the world. It is a dynamic place that interacts on a constant basis with people across the eight countries it spans, regulating and maintaining rainfall, sequestering carbon, and generating environmental benefits for local communities and for the whole of the planet. Ensuring the integrity and functioning of the Amazon is a core priority of the Global Environment Facility, whose #AmazonSustainableLandscapes Program has worked for 10 years to bolster the health of the biome through collaboration, coordination, and an integrated approach to protecting primary forests, fostering sustainable land use, and restoring vegetation across national borders. It is the first program bringing all eight sovereign nations of the Amazon together to look beyond their borders and collaborate towards a common goal. While there is much more to do, the outcomes of the The World Bank-managed program are dramatic and a source of hope for those striving for new global biodiversity targets. The Amazon Sustainable Landscapes program, a partnership also involving CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe-, WWF, FAO, UNDP, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UNIDO, and Conservation International, has supported protected areas equivalent to the size of Panama; prevented carbon emissions equivalent to 18 million vehicles; and directly benefitted 32,000 local people. At a side event during the UN Biodiversity's COP16 Colombia in Cali, representatives involved with the program from across the Amazon came together to share lessons and stress the need for continued investment in collaborative solutions, particularly in light of the recent severe drought that has affected the region, with stark effects for ecosystems, wildlife, and peoples’ livelihoods, food sources, and even ability to go to school or vote when low water levels prevent transit by boat. “The last two years have been very dramatic,” Claude Gascon, GEF Director of Programs, told the event, stressing the need for continued long-term partnership for sustained health of the Amazon. “We are at about 80 percent forest cover. We need to maintain not just the forest cover but the rivers, and work together towards getting Amazonia on a pathway to a different, more sustainable model of economic and social development.”

The Latin America and Caribbean region is a biodiversity superpower, housing two-thirds of the world’s species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants, and insects. However, this natural wealth is under significant threat from climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has responded to these challenges with investments of over $5 billion, complemented by an additional $30 billion in co-financing. The goal is clear: halt and reverse the loss of flora and fauna by 2030 and head towards being "nature positive." With integrated programming, Conservation Trust Funds, and a focus on political coherence, the GEF is leading the charge for a healthier planet. Watch the full video to discover how these initiatives are galvanizing hope and defining the path forward. https://lnkd.in/e8Ww32nQ #GEFatCOP16Colombia | #COP16Colombia | COP16 Colombia | UN Biodiversity
