My career has centered on translating evidence to decision-making, and recently at the #globalEvidenceSummit a number of sessions focused on this topic. Too often we approach "evidence translation" as a formulaic process that happens after research is complete; but policymakers are humans too, battling with the same unending to-do lists, competing priorities, tight deadlines, and limited budgets. I offer some reflections from GES about different ways to approach this most important stage of research: turning it into action. https://lnkd.in/exEmqgf4

We are reflecting on The Global Evidence Summit (GES 2024) that took place in Prague last month. GES 2024 was full of energy and featured an impressive lineup of plenaries. The Alliance for Living Evidence (Alive) had a strong presence throughout the event, and we’re proud to have been part of many engaging sessions. Alive led impactful discussions on climate evidence alongside our council member and a global leader in the field Jan Minx. Our Director, Ruth Stewart, organised an outstanding Special Session with Centre for Evidence and Implementation's CEO, Robyn Mildon, on ‘Building a Truly Global Evidence Ecosystem.’ Meanwhile, our Chief Scientist, Britta Tendal Jeppesen co-chaired a highly engaging debate on AI, which many described as one of the highlights of the conference. Alive is a relatively new initiative, but GES 2024 solidified our position on the global stage. The strong presence of our Alliance members throughout the conference contributed to a vibrant and meaningful dialogue around our work, generating significant interest and excitement. We are energized by the momentum created and look forward to continuing our mission to improving societal outcomes through the production and use of timely, trustworthy and affordable evidence. #GES2024 #AliveEvidence #LivingEvidence

Na zahájení #GES2024 Vlastimil Válek, místopředseda vlády a ministr zdravotnictví České republiky, uvedl: „Medicína založená na důkazech (Evidence-Based Medicine – EBM) byla a nadále zůstává v popředí pokroků ve zdravotní péči po celém světě. Podpora EBM je samozřejmě jednou z nejdůležitějších priorit mého působení jako ministra zdravotnictví. Jsem hluboce oddán tomu, aby EBM nejen přežila, ale aby se jí v České republice dařilo. S touto vizí jsme založili Národní institut kvality a excelence zdravotnictví (NIKEZ), který se zaměřuje na vytváření doporučených postupů a operativních doporučení založených na důkazech s nejvyšší možnou kvalitou.“ Jsme hrdí, že jsme hostili takto významnou událost, která spojila dohromady členy komunity odborníků v oblasti tvorby a využívání důkazů ve zdravotnictví z celého světa. Poskytnutí přístupu do Cochrane Library je podpora slov pana ministra, zajistí, že rozhodnutí v oblasti zdravotnictví a výzkumu budou činěna na základě nejkvalitnějších důkazů. Studenti, kteří se v říjnu vracejí ke svým akademickým aktivitám, budou moci prozkoumat svět důkazů Cochrane.

We’re thrilled to have hosted this year’s Global Evidence Summit – GES 2024 – in beautiful Prague this September, bringing together nearly 2000 delegates from 71 countries. At the recent GES event in Prague, I had the opportunity to present the findings of a Rapid Systematic Review I led on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) interventions. A big thank to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and my colleagues Hugh (Technical Lead), Howard, Ashrita, Kevin, Ratika and Sujata. Special thanks to Cochrane for their support in my participation and to the Global Evidence Summit (GES) organizers for the wonderful event. 🌱 Eco-DRR uses nature-based solutions, such as green and blue infrastructure and non-structural interventions (early warning systems), to mitigate natural hazards, especially in Low—and Middle-Income Countries (L&MICs). 📊 Our review included 58 studies: 28 on effectiveness 10 on modeling 20 on cost-effectiveness 💡 Key findings: Significant impacts on natural capital (e.g., forest cover) and hazard exposure. Benefit-cost ratios of 4:1 or higher for many interventions.
