Today is the Chung Yeung Festival - also called Chongyang, the Double Ninth Festival, the Senior Citizens' Festival, and the Height Ascending Festival. This is an important public holiday in China and countries with people of Chinese heritage. Chung Yeung is an annual event that can be traced back to the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 A.D.). The day itself - the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar - is considered a day of bad luck and potential danger in Chinese culture. It's said to be the day when a man named Heng Jing, whose parents had been killed by a devil and who had been warned the previous day that the devil would reappear to strike his whole village with a disease, led the villagers into the mountains. The villagers each escaped with a piece of dogwood leaf and a cup of chrysanthemum wine. When the devil appeared in the empty village, he was intoxicated by the smells of dogwood and chrysanthemum, and Heng Jing was able to defeat the devil in a sword fight. As a celebration of overcoming danger and honoring ancestors, Chung Yeung has become an occasion for climbing mountains, hiking hills, and appreciating the chrysanthemum. Two traditional foods include Chung Yeung cake and chrysanthemum wine. In lieu of cake and wine, some add chrysanthemum petals to their food. #ChungYeung #culture

The St. Louis ERC Fall Meeting meeting was last week and WOW! Global LT had the opportunity to host an intercultural training session, "Cultural Sense Over Common Sense", at the meeting and it was a huge success. Today is a very special day for the Global LT community as we celebrate the late birthday of our founder, Hortensia. Her legacy and contribution to the world is immeasurable. Born in Cuba, she immigrated to the United States with her family in the early 1960s. She worked to support her family by teaching Spanish to non-native speakers, eventually starting her own language training company with only a phone and a filing cabinet. More than four decades later, our company has grown into a leading global provider of language and intercultural training and translation and interpretation services, serving multinational businesses worldwide. We honor her legacy every day by continuing the work she was so passionate about.
