Today is Indigenous People's Day, and 500,000 Arctic Indigenous peoples face immense cultural and heritage loss due to Arctic ice melt. Also at risk are global Indigenous and Original peoples for example. The Small Island States will lose their islands and heritage. Relocation is dislocation. As the polar ice melts, we must listen to the voices calling for peace and protection of the Arctic. The time for global action is now. Let’s work together to make a 10-year Moratorium—a preemptive and precautionary pause on exploitation of the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO) come to life. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ProtectTheArctic #ArcticAngels #ClimateAction #GlobalChoices # #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ProtectTheArctic #ArcticAngels #ClimateAction #GlobalChoices #IceCrisis

The Women and Climate gala dinner was a top-tier highlight of Climate Week 2024. What a delightful, fun and highly informative evening. Speakers and attendees alike were interesting, diverse, passionate, and engaged. The event could not have been better curated. Bravo to Michelle Li and her team! Sylvia Earle and I were interviewed by Shyla Raghav, Chief Climate Officier of Time Magazine. The focus was on the Arctic and its sea ice, and why it is not a mainstream topic given its loss has major and catastrophic global impacts, including extreme weather, deadly floods, hurricanes, droughts and heat waves and much more. In representing Global Choices and our work to protect the Arctic sea ice, which is the reflective shield against the sun's heat and radiation, I shared our proposed 10-year Moratorium, based on the precautionary principle - to preserve the sea ice we still have, which now melts into the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO) high seas each summer, from exploitive and commercial activities. Its loss has altered the Jet Stream and slowed ocean currents - in other words fiddled with the fundamental life-support systems of our planet. And, it is the trigger for 8 tipping points around the world. The CAO is non-jurisdictional, so belongs to no one and everyone, and is thus ideal for setting precedent for protecting other high seas on the planet. Sylvia made the points that the Central Arctic Ocean is also one of over 160 Hope Spots she and Mission Blue have identified. The CAO is the northernmost Hope Spot. Hope Spots need to be protected in order to conserve the unique and fragile biodiversity and ecosystem services of each one; they serve purposes far beyond their boundaries. She said that "knowing what we know now, that we didn't know before, we must act on that knowledge before it is too late" - and it is not too late - we still have time if we act NOW. #climateweeknyc #women #womenleadership #womenspeakers #arctic

🌍 This week, we're shining a spotlight on Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a powerful advocate for the rights of the Inuit of the Arctic and a true climate justice leader. As an elected representative, Sheila's tireless work has shaped policy and brought vital change to Inuit communities. Her contributions helped overhaul the education system in Nunavik, Northern Quebec, to better meet the needs of Inuit youth. Not only that, but Sheila was a driving force behind the Stockholm Convention, which bans harmful persistent organic pollutants that build up in Arctic food chains, endangering both the environment and the people who depend on it. 🌱❄️ Her leadership reminds us that climate action is also about human rights. Let’s take inspiration from Sheila and push for change that safeguards both people and the planet. Join us in supporting global efforts to protect the Arctic and the communities that call it home. 🌿 Get involved or donate to Global Choices today. Together, we can build a more sustainable future! #ClimateAction #HumanRights #InuitRights #GlobalChoices #SheilaWattCloutier #ProtectTheArctic

The cryosphere—Earth's frozen regions—plays a crucial role in regulating our planet’s climate. But as global temperatures rise, this natural cooling system is rapidly deteriorating. A 2°C temperature increase may seem small, but for the cryosphere, it's the tipping point, leading to irreversible damage that impacts us all. From rising sea levels to more extreme weather events, the loss of Arctic sea ice is a global issue. Learn why 2°C is too high and what we can do to protect the cryosphere in our latest blog post. 🌍❄️ Read the full article https://lnkd.in/ecXEmbiT Join us in the fight for a more sustainable future. #ClimateAction #SaveTheCryosphere #GlobalChoices #ClimateChange
