Should or do high schools in your country offer a Transition Year (TY) for teenagers? In Ireland, “99% of schools offer TY (Transition Year) programmes, and almost 80% of students choose it”. “Like Platform 9 3/4 in Harry Potter, it's a magical year where kids can take a “year out” from the academic treadmill and discover life. TY programmes could offer coding, car maintenance, political engagement, boxing, zip-lining, and more. They could learn how to run an investigation in a crime scene to studying for a driving theory test. It is a year for teenagers to take an academic break during their high school years to free themselves of subject based curriculum so they can explore the arts, practical life skills, and discover their passions. This has deepened their relationships with students and teachers while maturing and gaining confidence for life. Programs such as a TY year and mentors can support students in their academic and nonacademic pursuits. They can also offer guidance and encouragement to help them recognize and achieve their goals. If your high school does not offer a transition year, consider a mentor for your student https://lnkd.in/gbKpepjy. https://lnkd.in/gtiG2s5V

How important do you feel college rankings are when choosing schools? 1. Very important - my student and I use them when deciding where to apply to. 2. Useful - just another resource to consider. 3. Worthless - there are profit incentives - colleges submit their own data and can embellish them depending on the metrics. Perhaps we should not rank colleges but rather rate them - say like we do restaurants. When deciding where to eat we don’t have hierarchies. We decide based on the food we want to eat, the atmosphere we want to dine in, and the service we will receive. Colleges should be chosen based on academic major and programs, location, campus culture, and more…. What if we taught history through photographs and diary entries? One VA school is using primary sources (digitized artifacts provided by museums), to teach for example, desegregation. So history comes alive on a classroom rug while using smartboards and textbooks. Our past becomes stories that we explore and investigate, that encourage critical thinking and understanding instead of facts and dates to remember. History becomes humanized and our take away may just be empathy with lessons learned to better our future. https://lnkd.in/dQbjWBi #educationalconsulting https://lnkd.in/gEWFWNNM

What is "Summer Slide"? Some believe kids lose 17-34% of their previous year's learning during the summer. Keep summer fun and relaxed by continuing learning such as doing math while cooking, exploring art (painting, drawing, crafting, playing musical instruments), reading books of interest, solving puzzles, and teaching them geography during your travels.... https://lnkd.in/dQbjWBi #educationalconsulting https://lnkd.in/gTrhCqdb

Why do Schools have Summer Break? It’s not the agrarian calendar myth. It’s because families in the city left for the mountains or beaches when the weather started heating up with rural communities following suit. Do you think schools should be on a year-round calendar? Year-round schooling provides a more balanced school year and helps some families economically. However, a long summer break does enable schools to repair buildings, allows teachers to take a much-needed break, and students with opportunities such as summer camps, teen employment, and memorable family vacations. https://lnkd.in/dQbjWBi #schoolplacement #educationalconsulting https://lnkd.in/gGUZ6jsb

Self-knowledge leads to self-advocacy, which leads to greater confidence. This trajectory also cultivates neurodivergent students to become role models for other students with learning disabilities. "There is a simple and effective answer: When kids have a better understanding of the condition that affects their learning, they tend to have a better self-concept, and they are more likely to feel empowered and motivated to self-advocate. These keys unlock a child’s potential, resulting in better academic performance and better mental health." #educationalconsulting #specialneeds https://lnkd.in/gxvE3tyY
