It was 5 a.m. as we headed toward Chicago’s Art Museum, where runners with disabilities gather before the marathon. This was my fourth year supporting Cedric King, a double-amputee Army Ranger who lost his legs to an IED in Afghanistan. My role: set the pace, carry his gear, and ensure he gave it his all. This race was crucial—Cedric needed to prove he could finish under 6 hours to qualify for Tokyo. His previous attempts: 2022 Chicago: 6:15 (a full hour PR) 2023 Chicago: 7:15 2024 London: 7:20 I wasn’t sure if this would be his day, but Cedric was optimistic, greeting old friends with his usual infectious energy. As we started, I led, with Carolyn S. Daley behind, shielding him from the crowd. Carolyn was clutch throughout the race, often running ahead to grab water and hydrate us both. The first few miles were electric, but the real test came at mile 14—where Cedric had struggled in the past. This time, he showed no signs of slowing. I even had to remind him to pace himself. And that he did. As we approached the only real hill, conveniently located in the last 500 meters, Cedric became emotional. He was going to make it. He decided to walk for a bit—hills are tough for him—but unlike previous years when I’d have to pull him like a sled, this time, he didn’t even think about it. We finished at 5:37, shattering all expectations and securing spots for both Tokyo and Boston—his dream races. It’s still hard to comprehend how perfectly everything aligned. But one thing is clear—Cedric’s dedication made the difference. Race day isn’t just about that moment; it’s about the grind leading up to it. The missed runs, the hard days, the quiet discipline—that’s what really defines the outcome. On this day, the months of effort revealed something extraordinary: a dream realized.
