50% of foster kids are in 5% of U.S. counties. While children of all races are affected by the foster care system, Black children are disproportionately represented and face significant disparities in treatment and outcomes. These children are at a higher risk for negative outcomes later in life due to systemic issues and societal factors. Our Empower Every Community initiative focuses on addressing these critical issues by empowering local churches to take meaningful action. Churches, deeply embedded in their communities and trusted by their members, are uniquely positioned to help reverse racial disproportionality and improve outcomes for all families. Through research, we’ve identified 2,009 “Crux Codes”—specific zip codes where local churches can have a transformative impact. By leveraging the trust and relationships these churches have, we aim to reduce the number of children entering foster care and strengthen families through community-based Care-Sharing. As we observe World Peace Day, we’re reminded of the importance of solidarity in creating a peaceful and sustainable world. Our mission aligns deeply with this vision, as we work to address the intersection of violence and vulnerability in our communities. Violence disrupts family stability and often leads to immediate needs and separation. Escaping such situations can necessitate foster care, which increases the risk of future challenges. Our focus is on preventing the preventable—supporting families and children before situations escalate into violence or separation. A case worker described this incident and listed the physical needs and estimated value on CarePortal. Thanks to the power of the network, multiple platform users came together to meet this need. One church loaded a Walmart card with $400, a separate church family did the same for groceries at Aldi. Another church delivered kitchen, living room and bedroom furniture, with help from another church. Another individual chipped in with a sectional. By working together, these 6 contributors ensured that the family received everything needed. CarePortal’s technology doesn’t just connect individuals with needs—it fosters connection among communities to achieve a common goal. Let’s continue to harness the power of connection!

Known for receiving the 2023 Church of the Year award, Sagemont Community Church is making waves in the lives of children and families in foster care through their partnership with CarePortal. Despite challenges, including their location in one of Texas' top counties for children in foster care, Sagemont has taken a proactive approach and we are spotlighting it in our recent blog. Since joining CarePortal in late 2021, they've met over 170 requests and provided support to more than 550 children—an effort with an impact of nearly $155,000. Through CarePortal, Sagemont isn't just meeting immediate needs but also creating bonds with children, families, agency workers and community advocates.
